Very nice write up. If it had been me I would have thrown all that emissions crap and stock exhaust away while doing this job. But each to his own. Thanks folr taking the time to write and post it....

If I had thrown all that stuff away, I would have never been able to sell the car because of all the codes that it would throw!

If ya tune it there will be no codes to deal with. I threw that emissions junk away when I changed to plugs the first time 230,000 + miles ago. It has passed Georgia emissions tests for the last 12 years in a row...... But our situations were very different. As in that I will never sell this car. My Granddaddy always said that "if we were all the same it sure would be a dull world". Thanks for the post it will help alot of folks.

Thanks for the write up. I have a stupid question, what kind of soft scrubby sponge did you use to clean the heads? I'm having trouble getting mine clean and I'm trying to avoid razor blades or scotchbrite pads. thanks

I used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. If your gaskets are stuck bad, you may need something more abrasive.

I had to join this forum in order to tell you how grateful I am to you for posting this detailed write up. I traded my Toyota Camry for a 2000 6.0 liter V8 Silverado Truck with a blown head gasket and low miles to flip and sell for more. After looking around on the internet for a DIY for the truck or using Alldata . Nothing was helping, until I came across your thread.

I cannot Thank you enough for your help!! Here are some photos, heads are at shop getting valves grinded, and heads resurfaced.

Hey Clay, thanks for taking the time to join and respond! You look like one happy camper!. I have a ton more writeup's over at Digital Corvettes where I spend the majority of my time but I always like sharing my LS1 stuff with the experts here. Good luck with that rebuild and thanks again for chiming. Check back and let me know when you turn the key for the first time.

Nice writeup!

So question, is there a sequence/steps to remove the head bolts, or should I just use my impact to take them out?

No sequence to removing them but I personally wouldn't use a impact wrench to get them out. I would be afraid of snapping off a bolt head when it comes to aluminum heads. I soak the hell out of mine in PB Blaster and the bolt will come out with a little butt muscle behind your turn.

I don't use any air tools on my car. Everything is done by hand, assembly and disassembly.

You can break the torque with a wrench. Then it's no problem at all to use, say an 18v dewalt 1/4 impact to spin em out. I do it and did it no problems.

But I agree. Don't use it to break the INITIAL torque.
