Default Collectors leak

There is an exhaust leak on both sides, where the headers meet the exhaust. The band clamps don't seal well, especially where the bolt is.
No amount of tightening will fix this.
Has anyone used hi-temp goop (Permatex) to seal this area?
Any other recommendations?

I have used the goop before in combination with a band clamp with ok results but it wasn't perfect.... Can you post up a pic? Hope your doing well.

In theory, the band clamp should create an even, round, hold. They seem to be the proper design and fit for this purpose.
It could be that the collector & the exhaust tube are slightly out of alignment, and no amount of force will make a good seal.
There's a bit of carbon & exhaust pressure leaving before the O2 sensors, with soot at the rear pipes.
Mileage is just ok.
I think I'll give the goop a try.

Just throwing it out there, but are you using the band clamps that aren't stepped? They're made to actually deform around the joint and create a leak proof seal.

I myself have had issues in the past with the stepped clamps, that's why I ask.

Yes, they are stepped clamps.
It's getting cool out there with the windows down, & we're getting down to the last runs of this season. I'll put the goop in, for now, then see about getting the correct clamps.
Dave..is this the one you're using?

They're Accu-Seals / Easy Seals. When you but them they're completely flat, and not rolled into a tube yet. I believe 10.99 each at O'Reilly's?





When you torque them down they'll conform to the joint itself, thus "becoming" stepped. I've always used an impact on mine.

Dave,
I bought a set of the band clamps, and installed them today. Now that everything is sealed properly, the throttle response is 'crispy' and refined.
Even though the ECM is still relearning, I can tell that mileage has improved, noticeably.
Also, the O2's are now switching properly.
The difference is like night & day, and I feel like I'm driving a brand new engine!
