Default Magnaflow Loss at 450+rwhp?

I had just been thinking about this. Years ago I thought I saw some anecdotal evidence that upto 450 (or maybe even 470) the Magnaflow doesn't lose much to a 3" cutout. Maybe 2-3hp.

Is that true?

I'm putting together my winter project build list and right now I'm torn between two options:

1-7/8" Kooks Headers with 3" Kooks True Dual Sytem with Quad Tips (with BMR needed accessories) and it's looking like $2400 or so depending on the deal I can get.

The other option is to run the ARH 1-7/8" Headers with their Y-Pipe into a Magnaflow with Quad Tips. This looks like about $1700 based on what I'm seeing.

I plan on running some Tooley hand ported TFS 220s with a 231/238 camshaft with a ported FAST 102/120 setup. So I figure that should be good for at least 450rwhp.

If the Magnaflow isn't going to give up more than say 5hp, it might be worth it to go that route; however, if I ever go with a big CID motor down the road, it'll be a restriction.

Does anybody have anything to show at that power level cutout vs Magnaflow?

i dont know about power loss, but if the difference between your setups is $700, why not go with the better looking, sounding and flowing setup from the start? The Kooks should last forever and support basically anything you put it behind. I personally am not a fan of the magnaflow crossflow muffler though, but I think for the price difference it is worth going with the Kooks TD setup

Yeah 700 in the grand scheme of things isn't much, but it's still 700 lol. That's almost a FAST intake.

i like my magnaflow catback, looks great, fits nice, flows good, it just lacks in sound, its very very mild even with a stoker and big cam

i got my catback new for 350shipped if not mistaken but this was couple months back before they raised there prices

Blackbird, you only lost 2HP going from true duals right?

I sort of want the milder sound of the Magnaflow. I'm getting too old for a super loud exhaust all the time.

yes, i wouldnt even count that as a lost bc you can do 3 pulls and get 3 diff numbers so its really a wash in my book

i did lose some TQ tho, but that was with a off the shelf cam, i got a custom cam and made the TQ back and more streetable

my exhaust setup- kooks 1-7/8 (3.5 collectors) headers - kooks 3.5 ypipe - 3inch magnaflow catback

Why not just do a Magnaflow Catback with a cutout? Take the savings and buy that fast intake. I'm going to put a cutout on my Corsa. I like how mellow it is while cruising, but I also want the ability to scare people by giving it a little occasionally

I've thought about that too. Was actually going to do a DMH cutout with the stock exhaust and then have the best of everything. But then DMH basically goes off the deep end and sucks.

What other options are there besides crawling around under the car?

I have the magnaflow on mine and had a QTP cutout (fell off yesterday) and love it. The cutout was cool but after two motors going out and now falling off after they were installed with loctite and all, im done with the cutout. Like you said, there isnt any power difference and i was at the point where i rarely even used the cutout because it was so loud.

Ive known that a cut out in a Y-pipe exhaust set up is convenient, a Y-Pipe should produce more back pressure which reduces HP, with a cut out you wont have that problem, you should just do True Dual Exhaust with a X pipe and with Kooks 1 7/8 Steinless Steel headers more RWHP for sure!

I know. Just spending more on the exhaust than a Corvette exhaust makes it hard to swallow, lol.

But it's really what the cars should have had stock. It holds them back for no reason.

However, I know of race teams (road race) that use Y-pipe setups because, when engineered properly, can make more average power while reducing weight and keeping noise at legal levels.

I don't have any dyno numbers but I was running a 3" Hooker system with a cutout and I couldn't "feel" a difference from when it was open or closed but when I went with dumped duals I picked up a lot of low and midrange power. Mods are in sig.

Have you considered a Mufflex type exahust? I have 1 7/8" headers with 3" y-pipe into the Flowmaster 3">4" merge ran into a single 4" exhaust while using a Hooker Maxflow and it fits over the axle without relocating anything. Muffler is in stock location and exits on the driver's side (tip is hidden). I had it custom built as it was cheaper than buying the kit from Mufflex.

My Hooker Maxflow sounds almost identical to my buddy's 4" setup with his magnaflow and the system can use either muffler easily.

I have $1000 in everything from headers to the tip, including the fab/install cost. (I installed the headers/y-pipe, had the exhaust fabbed and installed.

Yeah Blu, I actually looked at Stainless Works 3.5" system as well. Problem with it is the cost - it ends up being more expensive than the Kooks True Duals...

I just bought the bends, muffler and a 4" stick and took it all to a muffler shop and they fabbed it for me after I told them what I was wanting. I think I paid around $400 for the parts (stick, muffler, bends, merge, etc) and labor.I then paid $630 for the headers and y-pipe from TSP for a total of $1030. It was what I found to be the most bang for the buck for me, esp after selling my old pacesetter Lt's and TSP TD's to offset 50% of the cost. No it is not stainless, but will last the life of the car with me as I have only averaged 4000 miles on it over the last 4 years.

BTW-I am in Santa Rosa County (just off 98) of you are interested in hearing/seeing the setup.
