Problem with water pump?? help Ok.. so here is what i did. I thought my water pump went bad and it still may be. I pulled off my thermostat and it was shot. So i replaced it with a 160 degree thermostat. That seemed to fix the problem.. or did it. The temp seems to be doing fine when im driving the car, usually runs about 180 to 190. But here is the problem i am seeing. When just at a stand still idling, the motor seems to still be getting really hot. Like seriously i watched it get to 230 and then turned it off. At idle is my car supposed to be getting this hot.. im not thinking so. Is it possible that my water pump wasn't working properly at idle and caused my old thermostat to go bad? Can you all tell me what your cars are running at idle? And do u think i need to replace my water pump? thanks
well to me it sounds like you didnt get all the air out of the colling system and its air bond. These cars are a bitch to get the air out of them if you never done it before. The car shouldnt go past 210 with a stock thermostat with a 160 that deff not right. Let the car cool off fully and check the level in the radiator.
The new thermostat could be bad and not open too or the pump could be bad but i doubt it. You would see it leaking. I really feel its airbond

I just over came a very similar issue to what your dealing with by simply draining my fluid, flushing out my system, and refilling the proper way. My steam vent had a small crack in the rubber hose and I developed an air pocket somewhere, which was causing it to overheat at idle.

At idle, with the stock/factory fan settings, these cars WILL get that hot, regardless of the thermostat temp setting.
This is one of the reasons I bought a DiabloSport product, so that I can change my fan settings at will, according to the outside temps/use (this is a daily driver), TOTALLY INDEPENDENT OF the custom CMR tune installed.
At idle, with the stock/factory fan settings, these cars WILL get that hot, regardless of the thermostat temp setting.

Yeah sadly enough, it IS always on, but not too bad for an almost 60 year old. 
(I have to start hitting the gym and going on LONG, fat burning, bike rides again. I was at about ~3.5%-5% body fat in my fit youth. ).
In the summer I set the low speed fan to come on at 190*, and turn off at 175*, and the high speed fan to come on at 205*, and turn off at 191*.
The other seasons, or if I am open tracking it, I set them accordingly.
