Default Be-Cool Package

Debating picking up the below

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/bc...model/firebird

Yes it's pricy, the debate isn't if I should get it but if you can "over cool" and engine.

My idle temps on number 8 get to the 225-230 range in traffic. At highway speeds i'm at a cool 190.

Stock water pump, stock thermostat.

Will a radiator this heavy duty over cool the engine? I don't want to get colder than 190 at cruise, but I would like to maintain the 190 in traffic.

If it is too much would the simple solution of reducing the amount of air that hits it resolve the issue?

first, id check for leaks and make sure youre cooling system is operating correctly.

if it is try a 160 stat and have your fans programmed to come on sooner.

Fans both come on and are at the proper RPM, no leaks and my steam vents route up correctly.

another thing about our stock fans is they tend to wear out quicker when theyre tuned to come on sooner. at least in my experience.

my tuner just recently replaced mine but i forgot what they installed.

Hmm, well the radiator cools it fine at speed. Maybe I should just replace the fans then....

Ok...this just changed to what aftermarket fans is everyone running.

Dude, thermostat only determines at what temp it opens. If I'm idling at 220 the thermostat has been open for a long time. Doesn't cool your engine more installing a lower/higher opening thermostat, just determines how quickly your car gets hot man.

The temperature of the thermostat is at which it opens and allows the coolant to pass through. It will make the coolant cycle sooner, and take longer to warm up, but it won't keep it any cooler once its open...contrary to popular belief.

its cooler when its cold out trust me.

my heat sucks in my GTO with my 160 when its freezing LOL.

but thats why i said to get your fans tuned to come on sooner.

but under cruising speeds both my cars run cooler with a 160.

160s will aid in cooling your motor.

i'd say go for it. thats on my todo list, the becool setup. though my car doesnt get that hot idling. well atleast when my water pump was fine. now it gets crazy hot. replacing it on friday w/ an ls2 one. no performance difference its just the newer style, will clear a fast 102, which is also on my list. lol

The original fans are more than adequate to cool these engines. These fans do not "wear out". They either work or don't work because their motor is dead or there's a vehicle electrical problem.

You're running hotter standing still because the water pump is pumping less GPM.

While it's difficult to increase the pump's GPM, getting a higher capacity radiator will help.

I had overheating issues until I went to the BeCool radiator (with stock fans). The engine never passes 180~190 on the hottest days in traffic with the A/C on.

It would also help (for an A4 car) to get an external transmission cooler (plate type, always). Doing so reduces the heat in the radiator AND eliminates the possibility of the in-tank transmission cooler going bad-and ruining the transmission.

Through my years of owning GM vehicles, I've always found their cooling systems to be barely capable for their application.

My car never gets above 215 sitting in traffic, and when the fans kick on the temp drops to 200. When the car is moving the temps are 186. I don't understand why the stock system "sucks."

ive had two sets of fans where their motors were making noises. they were still working but when i shut my car off i could hear squeaking as my fans were slowing down.

so mine indeed did wear out.

both times they were replaced those noises went away.

I see what you're saying, the bearings were shot. But the fans still ran and moved air.

The fans in my car are the originals and have 200K miles on them, they run fine.
