Default Crank Pulley mishap

Last night while driving home, I decided to stretch the legs on my camaro. At about 130-140 there was a loud pop and smoke. No power to any of the accessories. I shut the car off and coasted as far as I could and then pulled over. Popped the hood and saw the crank pulley hanging on the AC lines. The bolt backed out and the pulley flew up. I plan on ordering either a powerbond or ATI super dampener and an ARP crank bolt. When installing the new pulley, can I just press it on and then torque it down or is there a keyway? Anything else I need to do during install as well?

LQ9 crank by the way.

No keyway. You need a install tool. Vendors sell them here or on another site.

Like above no key, get the tool. The bolt is TTY so you cant use it to install.

Boiling the pulley and using a 2x4 and rubber mallet to finesse it on wouldn't do the trick?

you should have an install tool just in case.... However I've only used mine once on about 5 installs. Never pull the crank pulley on with a long bolt though....I usually use a mapp torch and heat only the back steel hub for about 5 minutes. Grab it with oven mits and it literally falls onto the crank and bottoms out. Never had an issue

Never beat on a crank damper with a hammer. You'll damage the crank thrust bearing. Always use the proper install tool. You can heat up the pulley some to aid in installation.

The snout is fine. The bolt backed out is all. Anyways, the car will be headed to spartan performance. They will do the work and the tune needs to be adjusted anyways.

The oil that pours out the front seal.

We have all powerbonds and bolts and install tool on sale right now.
I would recommend an underdrive. I use them on nearly every truck I touch and they always perform. I always like to pin the crank as well with the ATI pinning kit. Good insurance.

Great way to destroy the motor. When looking for used LS motors first thing to check is ANY crank pulley damage. Apparently LS motors are very susceptible to internal damage that way.

I would think heating the hub enough to make is slip on would burn or melt the front seal and cause it to leak.

I just used an LS7 crank bolt to pull the pulley on, then torqued it with the LS1 bolt. But this makes me want to go home and re-torque my crank bolt...lol

A new gm stock bolt has a very liberal amount of sealer under the flange to keep it in place.

Good advice here. My ATI backed out at 100mph less....pinned it. Insurance....

Love my ati. Nothing wrong with powerbond though, if you want the best quality with the HP gain then its ATI

Ive used powerbond 20x more than ati on any ls app. While the ati is considered tops, you are not buying the bottom of the barrel with PB. When you go to the local auto parts store and buy a replacement stock balancer, it is powerbond. They are built alot better than the stock unit, and use the same durolastimer rings to absorb that ati does.

I couldn't afford an ATI so I went with a powerbond UD pulley and an arp bolt. Everything appears to be alright and no damage to the snout. Thanks for the input fellas.
