Default Flowmaster Thunder or SLP LM1 Loudmouth Catback? 1999 SS

My 1999 SS currently has a Flowmaster Thunder catback on it. I saw a local deal come up for a slightly used SLP LM1 loudmouth catback. I am thinking of doing the switch.

Are the LM1s really raspy? Is it true that the Flowmaster Thunder is actually worse flowing than stock? I eventually want to go with LT headers and y pipe (they are currently stock).

With LT's and an ORY the LMI will be raspy as hell. Flowmaster flows at the lower end of the crssflow mufflers. Some crossflow mufflers will disguise the rasp better than others. Cats or a True Dual exhaust are the only truly effective eliminators of rasp.

LM1's are pretty raspy, but yes it will flow much better than the flowmaster...there are tons of soundclips of F-bodies with that catback, try youtube or this --> http://www.ls1sounds.com/slp_loudmouth.htm

I wouldn't run either of those. The flowmaster is poor for performance and the lm1 is raspy, obnoxious, and sounds bad at anything other than idle.

I have a Flowmaster weld-in in place of the factory SS muffler (along with LT's and ORY). I like the sound but it's not loud enough for me. I ran the original Loudmouth (this is back before there was a I or II) on my other LS1 cars. I preferred the "raw" sound of the Loudmouth; however, I did not have headers on those cars to compare. I've actually thought about giving LMI (or TSP Rumbler) a try since my Flowmaster is starting to rust.

I'd get the LM1 and when you get LT's and a ORY if its to loud and raspy just put a different muffler in the I-pipe. Thats probably the best part of the LM exhaust it's cheaper and easier to customize than most other exhaust. I may switch to one someday just for that reason.

Option C: None of those. IMO those are the two worst catbacks for our cars.

LM1 for sure! On a stock car one one with out long tubes it is not all that raspy or as obnoxious as people make it seem. On modded car with long tubes it is not for everyone, but I personally love the sound. It definitely is about as free flow as you can get.

I have an LM1 with stock manifolds and cats. It is loud.....but not objectionably so to me. At full throttle it stirs the soul. Going down the highway at 65 mph, it is louder than stock, but I don't mind it. I do not notice any rasp. Is it too loud......? Not for me, but maybe for others.

How loud or obnoxious a system is to each is completely subjective, so what i tell you or someone else tells you........take with a grain of salt. But I like mine. With no cats and headers, it might be a different story.

I really like the Lm1 on the stock manifolds but as soon as I went with LTs it definitely had drone to it. Some people love it some people hate it.
