I know they say it is for greases and not many manufacturers do it...My personal opinion is it matters. In my mind, your bearings in the engine wear and something that shows it sustains less wear by using "X" oil is relevant in my mind - now that test kinda throws the results a little bit in the chart- but the VI and Pour Point I think are really crucial points as well. Fire and flash I think are important, but kind of secondary in my mind. Like I said, people are free to use the info on that chart as they see fit...it should give you an idea of how all the oils compare though as I continue compiling the list of oils up...

And thanks for the link- I'll give it a read on lunch tomorrow.

I switched to Valvoline VR1 10w-30 non synthetic. Probably stick with that for the foreseeable future.

Interesting read- the only thing I didn't like is how he used different weight oils for the test.

5W30, 15W40, 0W20, etc all will have different properties to them even if they are the exact same brand/type.

So to compare a 5w30 "X" brand to a 0W20 "Y" brand test result wise, I don't find it consistent or accurate.

I've seen a difference in my research and chart comparison already, that's why I want to do the chart for each weight, so that you can compare 5W30's to each other, 10W30's to each other and so on and so forth.

I am almost certain that there will be oils like Mobil 1 that will outperform in one category, but will lose to Amsoil, or Valveoline, etc, in another category.

I know that by the time I finish my chart (which will take awhile) I intend to be able to pop it open whenever I need oil for any of my vehicles and go...Ok, this is the best, let's snag that... be it for the camaro, the jeep, a buddies BMW, VW, or even the snowmobiles...

I do agree though- there is no "bad" oil, but there are oils that definetly protect more than others....

DaSkinnyGuy, you say Napa stocks Amsoil? I'll look into that because I like the stuff also.
Yep! I have switched to the Ultra Platinum as well, since the German Castrol is kaput. The special here is 5 quarts with a filter under 10 bucks is 32.99, I buy that **** up every time they run the special at Autozone, usually buy it X2, 10 quarts, two filters for $76.00, not bad considering that **** is almost 10.00 a quart in most places. I have been getting the 0W-40.

You add MP (master pack) on to the end of your Wix part number and it is for a case of 12. Not all part numbers are available like this but a lot are.

I was hoping you were buying them in a store at that price. FYI you can buy a case of them off RockAuto for a little under $60 shipped, just remember to do a google search for a 5% discount code.

Also where are you buying the $15 5qt jugs of synthetic oil at?

Carquest oil filters are exactly the same as Wix.

Back to oil, I'm thinking about the Pennzoil Ultra Euro stuff.

CarQuest Blue filters are the same a Wix. They try handing me a red one every time I'm there. I wouldn't want people that don't know thinking there getting a premium filter when there really getting an average one. Also just to get all of the details out there NAPA Gold is also a Wix filter.

Good to know. The last Wix/CarQuest filters I bought were white.

They're all mostly white, it's just the writing on the filter and box that are blue. Its just how CarQuest labels their 2 lines of parts, their standard line is red and premium is blue.

Well folks, at this point in this thread, thanks to the many comments and wealth of information provided, I'm concluding that Penzzoil Ultra is a very good oil that's readily available. The speedtalk page listed it at the top and I'm gonna assume the Euro version would be a premium version of it.

I've decided my replacement for German Castrol will be Penzzoil Ultra Euro 5W-30.

I know it's a day late and a dollar short, but I've always been happy with Rotella T6 and a PureOne filter.

What is with the ultra premium platinum being propane powered or whatever? Seems like a sales gimmick...

Super tech syn is mid teens in price IIRC.

Rotella no longer has the high zinc and phosphorus that it once had . Don't use it , good zinc can be found in VR-1 , Brad Penn and Driven (formally Joe Gibbs racing oil).

Joe Gibbs LS30 too. It's very good stuff and what a lot of engine builders recommend.

I recently switched to this as well in my cammed t/a. The vr1 racing non syn is hard to beat for the $$ imo. I'v always used rotella but the vr1 has quieted down the sewing machine noise lol.
Honestly I think people over think this stuff. I work in the industry and see many cars come in the shop with over 200k miles with nothing but regular changes with dino oil. I don't see the point in paying the extra cost of the syn if you just change it normally.

My first car had the 4.3 v6 and went 300k without ever being opened up on regular yellow bottle Pennzoil. Needless to say I'm a customer for life, because that's proof they make a solid product. I have bought other oil without issue if Pennzoil is sold out or whatever, but I try to stay loyal when possible.
