Default 2000 ss throwing belts(time for a katech manual tensioner)?

My car threw the belt yesterday and roped one of the ribs off. I was wondering should I go with a manual tensioner or replace the oem one. I put the car on the the dunno at slow hawk and put down 329hp and 330tq. I did a fast 1/4 mile rip getting on the highway and when I got home the car was making a sound, that sounded like a bad lifter. I popped the hood and I could see the tensioner bouncing from left to right and making the noise. I shut the car down check things out, and turn it back on and the belt feel right off.

About the most fool proof way of fixing this i have found is to make a guard. Get a piece of aluminum, trace a circle on it larger than your pulley by about 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" cut it out and then put you a hole in the center for the bolt. Your guard will probably need a shim behind to keep it off the pulley and you'll need a little longer bolt. It'll be good for 7k+rpm after that.

I was also thinking that the tensioner spring its self is bad so what am I looking at $50 for that or katech has the manual tensioner with the higher ribbed pulley for $130.

I had a manual tensioner on my truck for about a year and a half, and it shredded 4 belts. I thought it was pulley alignment, so I went through getting all the pulleys in perfect alignment over and over. The last one cut the wiring harness when it went. I had to pigtail wires to get the truck running on the side of the interstate. THAT was awesome...

After that, I finally went to a stock-type spring loaded tensioner and haven't looked back.

I started to look more into it and a couple posts say if you have a underdrive pulley you should get a manual tensioner. It is not installed yet but will be next week

So I put the old belt back on just so I can move the car. I let the car run for a little and it stayed on and man I the tensioner pretty tight. The car only has 47,xxx miles and the belt only had about 2000miles on it. Just thought I would add that

I had the same issue a few years ago. Got this pulley for about $10 and haven't had a problem since.

I've had a Katech manual tensioner on my 99Z28 for over 12 years and never had any issues with it causing any premature belt wear, or ever throwing a belt again. FYI, with the Katech or any other manual tensioner you need to use a torque wrench to set the correct tension on the belt(25 lb.ft., Katech), and if the belt is new you'll need to re-torque it after a few hundred miles since the new belt will stretch a little bit. Plus, it just looks a lot better than the bulky gm tensioner.

Mine threw a belt about 6 years ago. I bought a replacement spring tensioner and its been all good ever since.
