Default question about ypipe and ipipe

My first time messing with my exhaust. I have an aftermarket three inch ypipe but it seems that it's a tight fit going into the factory ipipe. I took it to an exhaust shop and they said they couldn't do it because the factory clamp on the ipipe is welded. Is this true?

Sounds like that exhaust shop didn't want to make it work. There are a number of different struggles depending on which y-pipe you have, but all can be made to work with a little effort. Most y-pipes are meant to work with a 3" i-pipe, and I believe the factory is only a 2.75". You may need to use a reducer, or have the exhaust shop expand the stock i-pipe, which most can do. They may need to cut the clamp off and use a new one, or just weld the y-pipe to the i-pipe.

The guy then asked me how much I wanted to spend. Suggesting he build a ypipe from scratch. Im not about to do that. He put me off for a whole week of excuses then finally got it on the rack and backed down from doing the job. If I was in texas it wouldve been done the first day. Ive been to three exhaust shops to fix a very small problem and they all dont want to fool with it. Hard to find competent exhaust shops on northern Louisiana.

It takes about 30 seconds with an angle grinder to knock the welded clamp off the exhaust and grind it smooth. I've done that many times.

I've had more than my share of exhaust woes myself.

I'm at O'Reilly and just for a temp solution, they have a three inch pipe stepped down to a 2.5. Ill go buy a grinder to get the old clamp off and see what I can do with the stock ipipe

Harbor Freight sells a grinder that doesn't break the bank. Pick up a pad for grinding and a disc for cutting. O'Reilly is one of the better auto parts stores as well.

The various Y pipes I've had were all a very tight fit
to the "factory" (SLP CME) I-pipe. They all needed a
lot of griefing to get more than half an inch into the
end. And you need that or will have to crush the pipe
and then you're stuck next time, big time.

You could consider slitting the I at least as far in as
your band clamp will cover, that's just hacksaw /
sawzall / cutoff wheel work.

There are also larger band clamps which can be a
butted-pipe union, if you have equal diameters.

So what are most guys doing? deleting the factory ipipe and fabbing a custom three inch? Can you even purchase a three inch ipipe? If I bought an aftermarket catback, would it include the ipipe?

Most guys do tend to purchase an aftermarket catback prior to moving forward to the headers and y-pipe, and yes most aftermarket catback's do come with a 3" intermediate pipe.

The factory clamp is not welded on.

If you need another 3" i-pipe that will fit the factory 2.75" y-pipe, PM me I've got one I ordered but never used.
