True duals or big single?
I recently acquired a 1998 Formula that's getting an engine swap. It's basically getting an iron block LS3 with a LPE GT11 cam along with a T-56 swap.
I've been trying to decide what kind of exhaust I want to run on it. I noticed that TSP has started carrying a 2.5" true dual setup from Hooker that looked nice. Anyone have experience with that one?
I like their 3" true duals, but my car will be lowered so I don't think they would work very well. Plus, they're loud as hell. This car will be built for daily driving/road course duty.
I don't want anything ridiculously loud, I have a baby on the way and I don't want to wake him up every time I start the car in the morning.
My previous car had Hooker 1-7/8 long tubes, mufflex y-pipe, 4" cutout, then reduced into a 3" cat-back. It sounded nice, but I could definitely feel a difference with the cutout closed. I'd like to have something that would flow well and not need a cutout.
I've been bouncing back and forth between the new Hooker Blackheart duals, a 4" Mufflex (or similar home built), or some home built 3".
Once again, ground clearance is an issue... Any insight would be awesome.
Thanks
Someone put a TA wing on it for some reason... Trying to see if they still have the factory hatch. May just paint the TA wing though...

It seems like the new Hooker setup is pretty nice, I just don't know if 2.5" duals will be enough for the engine setup I'm building. I've read 2.5" duals can support around 500hp, but I'm not sure if that meant rwhp or fwhp. I mean, it'll just be a iron LS3 with a small cam. I don't want the exhaust to be a restriction though.

He was going to do 4" after a 3" flowmaster merge but the mufflers were all too large outside case diameter. Ended up doing 3" into 3.5" merge then back down to 3" bullet. Seems to work well and isn't very loud at all. Everything tucks well with this setup.

Am I missing something or do you guys think that will work?
I'd like to run the exhaust out the back of possible. That's another reason I'm tending to steer away from duals unless I can get them to go all the way.
Another thought on building the y-pipe is to get some oval tubing on the drivers side of the Y to get some extra clearance. If it wasn't so expensive I'd just do the whole thing in oval tubing... Haha.
If you could build an amazing y-pipe, how would you do it?
Something like dckmn's setup is somewhat what I had in mind. Except I would stay 4" all the way with a Borla XR-1 and a hidden tip.
I had one similar to the other one with the cutout on my last car. It worked ok I just want something that works well and sounds nice without needing a cutout.
I've been thinking about deleting the CB and putting a race muffler on the end to lose some weight.
Dckmn, would a pair of round borla mufflers fit where you have the bullets? I may copy your setup and use some different mufflers.
