Default True duals or big single?

Hey guys,

I recently acquired a 1998 Formula that's getting an engine swap. It's basically getting an iron block LS3 with a LPE GT11 cam along with a T-56 swap.

I've been trying to decide what kind of exhaust I want to run on it. I noticed that TSP has started carrying a 2.5" true dual setup from Hooker that looked nice. Anyone have experience with that one?

I like their 3" true duals, but my car will be lowered so I don't think they would work very well. Plus, they're loud as hell. This car will be built for daily driving/road course duty.

I don't want anything ridiculously loud, I have a baby on the way and I don't want to wake him up every time I start the car in the morning.

My previous car had Hooker 1-7/8 long tubes, mufflex y-pipe, 4" cutout, then reduced into a 3" cat-back. It sounded nice, but I could definitely feel a difference with the cutout closed. I'd like to have something that would flow well and not need a cutout.

I've been bouncing back and forth between the new Hooker Blackheart duals, a 4" Mufflex (or similar home built), or some home built 3".

Once again, ground clearance is an issue... Any insight would be awesome.

Thanks

Couple pics of the victim. Got the car (has a cracked block), a 5.3, a 6.0, and some LS3 pistons for $1500. Both engines need to be rebuilt, so the 6.0 is getting machined for the LS3 pistons. Gonna pick up some LS3 heads and an intake later on. Should be around 440rwhp with the GT11 cam and full bolt ons.

Someone put a TA wing on it for some reason... Trying to see if they still have the factory hatch. May just paint the TA wing though...

I liked the idea of true duals but I didn't want a dumped exhaust. It seemed like a huge pain to run them out the back as well. Then I came across the Mufflex systems and I believe that I will be going with a singe 4inch system.

Yeah, I like the idea of duals as well. The ground clearance is what I'm worried about. I keep leaning more toward Mufflex, I just can't seem to get the idea of duals out of my head.

It seems like the new Hooker setup is pretty nice, I just don't know if 2.5" duals will be enough for the engine setup I'm building. I've read 2.5" duals can support around 500hp, but I'm not sure if that meant rwhp or fwhp. I mean, it'll just be a iron LS3 with a small cam. I don't want the exhaust to be a restriction though.

I am a fan of the large single exhaust, TD's sound killer though. Personal preferance really. I went with a 3.5" Mufflex system...

Yeah, I've been doing some more research. Might end up getting some 3" mandrel bends, flowmaster merge, the Hawks 4" system, and a Borla XR-1. That might work...

Who knows?.. haha

i got some mandrel bends and redid my y pipe and reused my flow master merge. got some 4" bends and straight pipe and made our own 4" system with a straight through 2 foot long diesel type muffler. only loses 4-5 rwhp compared to open headers.

My roommate just did a new single on his car. To go big it's almost as difficult as duals as far as space/ground clearance.

He was going to do 4" after a 3" flowmaster merge but the mufflers were all too large outside case diameter. Ended up doing 3" into 3.5" merge then back down to 3" bullet. Seems to work well and isn't very loud at all. Everything tucks well with this setup.

True duals. atleast 2.5".

If you were to get a big single it would take a pipe about 3.75" diameter to flow the same. Plus who doesnt like duals? (besides the wallet)

Well, my thinking with what I mentioned before is I could build a y-pipe using mandrel bends and the flowmaster merge, then cut the 3" adapter part off of the Hawks Sinister system and use that since it's already made for the car and just add the 4" borla muffler in the stock location.

Am I missing something or do you guys think that will work?

I'd like to run the exhaust out the back of possible. That's another reason I'm tending to steer away from duals unless I can get them to go all the way.

Another thought on building the y-pipe is to get some oval tubing on the drivers side of the Y to get some extra clearance. If it wasn't so expensive I'd just do the whole thing in oval tubing... Haha.

If you could build an amazing y-pipe, how would you do it?

Those are nice!

Something like dckmn's setup is somewhat what I had in mind. Except I would stay 4" all the way with a Borla XR-1 and a hidden tip.

I had one similar to the other one with the cutout on my last car. It worked ok I just want something that works well and sounds nice without needing a cutout.

Yea mine is a Burns 3" into 4' merge into a QTP 4' cutout necked back down to a 3'.

I've been thinking about deleting the CB and putting a race muffler on the end to lose some weight.

Yeah. That would definitely lose some weight. Might be pretty loud inside though.

Dckmn, would a pair of round borla mufflers fit where you have the bullets? I may copy your setup and use some different mufflers.

Thinking maybe some corsa clones or something similar to yours or dckmn's.

On my setup I have a 3" y-pipe with dual 3" electric cutouts merging into a single 4" pipe going to the mufflex catback with a spintech muffler. Sounds very good with a deep rumble closed and it can go from mild to wild with the flip of a switch.
