Default 2 different heads on a LS1?

Why would someone have a 706 and 862/863? head on the same engine? I'm looking at a Camaro for sal and he said the engine has 2 different heads on it and I didn't think this was normal. Thanks in advance.

Hard to say. Is he claiming it is a 5.7 block? Could it possibly be a 5.3 with one head replaced?

Probably because he got bit by the castech bug and threw a 862 on in a pinch would be my guess.

I offered him $2k since the heads need to be pulled and not telling what I would find wrong at that point.

I once had a guy try to sell me a LS1 with 706 heads on it. Told me it would better than an LS6 due to higher compression. He wanted 600 for the motor. I walked away, because what else wasn't right? That was a while ago. Maybe three years back now.

Point is you see people trying to pull this crap all the time. You were smart to ask questions.

I thought I knew enough about these engines, I was wrong lol actually I never have looked into truck heads but I had a good feeling it's a bad idea to run 2 different heads on an engine

706 & 862s are the same head, the only difference is the casting #s.

How many people use 1 of each on their engine?

I would, like I said, other than the casting number the heads are the same.

Ive seen it right from GM on a friends '08 or '09 (cant remember) 5.3 Silverado, had a 799 on one side and a 243 on the other side. And yes he bought the truck brand new (had less than 10 miles on it) from the dealer. A few others have posted on here of having seen the same thing.

Certain 243's are the same as 799, not all. Depends which 243 he got, the 243 on my GTO has different valves than the 243 on the C5 Z06

And the 5.7 NEVER came with either 706 nor 862. I still suspect there was a castech fail, so an 862 was swapped on. Which to me isn't the real issue. It's that someone seems to have tried to pawn off a Frankensteined motor as a GM. Not a reference to Chris Frank, but to the monster Mary Shelly created

Is the block iron ? My guess its a 4.8/ 5.3 til verified its 5.7. I would not be concerned if 706/862 they are a match, like 243/799. Depending on the source its not that uncommon to find mismatch casting numbers especially from remanufactured engine company's. A few years ago I bought a low mileage car with a Jasper remanufactured engine and it had a 853 on it and a 317. Now those don't match ..... probably milled the 317 down to get close to 67cc .These company treat these as cores and as long as they function within spec they use them.Sounds crazy but true !

The valves may be different, but the actual bare head itself is the same no?

Not all 243 are created equal. They were used in truck 4.8 and 5.3 motors as well as GTO and vette LS2 and 6.

To my knowledge only the vette had sodium valves. All others used steel.

Also, the 799 was sand cast and the 243 die cast. Dimensionally identical, but the die casting results in smoother finish
