Default !AIR with Cats, bad idea?

I have a 98, and I'll be adding a LS6 intake, and a set of LT's, (carsound cats ~probably~) X=pipe, out the back...

I'll be taking the EGR out obviosly, but I'm uncertain what would be the BEST option with the AIR?

Take it out... cleans the engine bay up a little, slight weight reduction, race style headers....

BUT, I'm gonna throw some carsound cats on the exhaust for a less chance of rasp, and fumes and what not... with that though, how bad of a idea is it to keep the cats, and do the !AIR???

I probably would as i just !AIR myself. It really looks awesome once you get all the tubing and air pipes that connected to the headers out. Much cleaner engine bay.

I had this same exact thought, but in the end I decided to keep AIR. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

better to be safe as in... it'll ruin the cats... just not last as long, not really matter... What's the safe side?

I don't think it'll ruin your cats. AIR to help with emissions when the cats get too cool, like on startup and maybe sitting at a light which is a tiny fraction of the time you spend driving your car.

I thought the purpose AIR system was to get the cats to start working earlier, like on start-up and such. Do all cars with cats have a system similar to the AIR system?

It is my understanding that not all cars have AIR systems and the reason ours do is because of the longer distance from the manifolds to the cats. No you don't need AIR to run cats.

I kept the air and deleted the Egr. If I had it to do over again I would have deleted the Air aswell.

the !air mod will not hurt the cats. It will just take longer for the cats to light off from a cold start. Unless you are hugging trees, i wouldn't worry about it.

I'm not a tree hugger I just wanted to know what the downside of not having the AIR hooked up if you still run cats...

What's considered a "bad" cat? do they get plugged up or something?

I guess I'm just trying to find out if its 'Dumb' on my part to put in new cats, but take the AIR system out.

I've posted this same question before. Some people say !AIR is not good for the cats, and some say it doesn't matter. Since there was not a clear cut answer, I played it safe and left the AIR system.

Ditto.

People get aftermarket cats and stock ones mixed up.

The stockones will die if you have to air to them but aftermarket ones are not dependent on it.

I asked the same questions as I was getting my Headers, and I went with QTP Raceheaders with No air. On Barrys recomendations at that.

I took them both out when I did the ls6 and headers and so far there are no downsides to it.

!Air. Cleans up the engine bay and has no side effects when running aftermarket cats.
