I've had both. A borla catback on my 99 Z28 and Kooks true duals with the x pipe on my 2000 Z28. I hands down say the duals.

Obviously they will not be as restrictive as a catback if your building something stout, but the sound is so much better. The car has a muscle car sound instead of a Z71 with a Flowmaster muffler sound.

I get compliments all the time about the exhaust and people who are familiar with these cars say they've never heard a catback or y pipe that sounds like that. Which based on all the cars I've heard that's true.

Duals is the only exhaust I'd run on the LS motors.

True duals w/ X-pipe...

Why?

The scavenging effect. Catbacks are half-measures, and end up costing you more when you have finally get serious and buy true duals.

I've been thinking the same for the last 6months. I have SLP headers/Y pipe and Borla out back....I HATE THE SOUND!!! I'm going with Hooker Blackhart system. There stainless, fit tight under the car and cost about 1500-1600+-. I looked at Kooks, they are 3" and the Hookers are 2.5 but Kooks are way out of my price range so......I'll be ordering Hookers tomorrow. They sound great. This is just my 2c

Step 1 with a Y pipe, throw it in the trash

I have run both as well and love the true duals over the cat-backs. Dropped .20 on my old Formula over a Borla with no plate and the sound was amazing. It was a 3" custom set up side exit with Edelbrock SDT 304s. I recently replaced the Bassani cat-back on my 2000 Z28 with the TSP Rumbler X dumped true duals and it woke the cam only car up. It sounds amazing and was only $409.

I run a sleeper style cam. 218/234 .601/.598 on a 117 lsa...the exhaust makes it louder than the cam does. But either way it sounds great. Gets lots of looks also. Going to raise the idle rpm to 850 from 650 so it'll have a lil more chop at idle which I love.
