Default Catch can, breather can or ???

First off, I'm sorry if this topic has been beaten up before. I've gone to the end of the internet doing research on something seemingly so menial, but all I've gotten was more confused. Please help straighten me out.

I'm running a 6.0 block with L92 heads and an LS3 intake. I bought the intake used and found some oil in it. I found that's normal, but can be minimized somewhat by the use of a catch can.

Simple, right? While researching catch cans, I've found that there is a ton of **** on eBay. Also, there's a huge difference between a standard catch can and a breather can. I'm truely confused which one is better for an LS application, and the correct way to route them. My brain hurts. Can y'all help me understand these and help me out?

When you say breather can are you referring to breathers that replace the oil fill cap?

As for using a breather on the catch can you do not want to use an open breather on an engine that uses a MAF, as all air entering the engine needs to go through the MAF to be metered. An open breather will suck unmetered air into the engine and make its way into the intake. This is not the end of the world and shouldn't damage the engine but will technically make it run more lean.
Now if you have a one way check valve in the breather that only lets air out to vent the crankcase then you are ok (these will not be the cheap ebay cans).
If the engine is not running a MAF and using an SD tune then you are ok with an open breather.
My advice is buy a quality can once(not a cheap one, figure out it sucks and then buy a good one later) from a site sponsor on the right >>>

I was actually referring to the catch cans with the breather built into it... usually sits on top... not sure what their function is.

Thank you! Kinda off topic, but as far as a speed density setup, is that all taken care of in the ecm tune?

So correct me if I'm wrong... the eBay sh#t is garbage. On LS engines you should run a closed system. And, you get what you pay for.

Thanks slogo... that was s good read!

I've got no complaints. Catches a fair bit of oil and my intake and TB is noticeably cleaner since i got the can.

And that's all I'm basically expecting. I'm sure of the more expensive catch cans are better for certain applications and whatnot, but for a basic street driven n/a setup the Norris one seems good enough from what i've seen. The price of some of them are insane for what they are
