good conventional oil??
good conventional oil?? I'm breaking in a brand new engine. I originally put in 15W-40 rotella in for the first 500 miles. NAPA gave me a deal on 5W-20 on Pennzoil conventional. I have heard that Pennzoil VR1 racing oil is the best because it has a high zinc content. I was planning on running this oil for 2000 miles then switching to Royal Purple 5W-20. what do you guys think?
Agreed, go by what the builder says. That's who set the clearances.
For my Dart 400 it was Valvoline VR 10w-40, that again for the first oil change and then to Castrol synthetic Edge 10w-40 there after.
For the. 383 LS1 & 416 LS was Valvoline VR 10w-30, that again for the first oil change and then to Mobile 1 synthetic 5w-30 there after for normal use.
I would talk to the builder about what oil the builder recommends and use that.

I talked with my engine builder and he recommended 10W-30. I am going to use Valvoline VR1 10W-30 for the next 2000 miles. Then he recommended synthetic oil and he recommended NOT using Royal Purple! Which of course I have 24 quarts of. NAPA gave me a brochure for Renegade synthetic racing oil 10W-30 which is about $7.99 a quart.

I've never heard of Renegade Racing oil, and I can't seem to find any information about it. So for that reason I wouldn't run it. It might be good, it might be bad, I don't know. I personally use Redline since I only change my oil 2 times per year, and I flog my car all the time. If that's too expensive I would probably run Mobil 1 0W40 or Rotella T6, both have a decent helping of ZDDP compared to most other oils.
If you ever take a look around BITOG forums you'll find that Royal Purple is regarded as mediocre with a premium price. If you look around you can usually find Redline oil for about the same price as Royal Purple, and it's basically the best oil you could possibly buy for a street car.

I've used RP in several cars,,, I think its a notch below Redline, it doesn't seem to have as good of heat resistance as the Redline.
Hard to go wrong with any full synthetic these days really.. My bike gets Motul 5W-60 cause its not a high mile machine and it only
needs a couple quarts so cost isn't a big deal on it..
Want to have fun,, read up on the GM required DEXOS oil standard. ITs specifically for the Ecotec style motors, Prob the Vette too don't know..
Comes mostly in 0W-30 and 5W-30, some of their 4 and 6 cylinders will eat their guts out if you try anything else in them that doesn't meet their spec.
Funny thing is when you look at their approved oil list,, some of them you would never think of as a "top tier" oil..
