Default Rear exit exhaust too loud, what about side exit??

I am running a custom 3" dual exhaust over the axle and out the back/high flow cats/flowmaster 1 chambers. At the beginning of the year I installed the high flow cats as last year I was told I was over the 95db rating for our local auto-x events. I could hear a difference for sure after the cats were installed but the last event a week or so ago I was recorded at 97db. I know swapping mufflers would most likely get me below the limit but I really enjoy the sound/tone of the 1-chambers and they are also compact and fit really well where they are located. A few month ago I installed a set of tips to finish out the rear. I am wondering if cutting off the tips and doing turn down style tips angle at like 45* out the side would cut down on some of the noise. I also really like the look of side exit exhaust and would love to have it come out just behind the rear tires on each side but I am more after function over form so it that wouldn't do anything to quiet (would separating the exhaust like that even make a difference??) it down I am against that route.

If you could put turn-downs out the back it might help by aiming the exhaust waves towards the ground to help absorb the sound some.

There are ways to "beat" the sound cops...so I've read.

How do they check, if X amount of feet from the rear ?

50 feet away but not directly behind the vehicle.

This is the layout currently:

I just went to a 3" system with Ultra-flo's, but even being a straight through muffler, not really that bad IMO....but bigger than the FM 1 chambers.

If you don't have room for mufflers under the car now, where exactly do you plan to put them on a side-exit?

I don't think anyone can answer your question. You're only talking about moving the exhaust exits a couple of feet and changing the angle slightly. You'll just have to have both tested to really know. If they were testing dBs from directly behind the car, it would probably be quieter with the tips behind the rear wheels and pointing down, but they do not test it like that.

Those Flowmaster 1 series mufflers are going to be loud no matter where you route it.

As said, Series 10 Flowmasters are the smallest they make, so you just need to put bigger mufflers in there.

Yeah, it may be a hard thing to answer without doing it. I guess in a simple question: Would it be just as loud if I cut off the tips and had turn downs installed vs the straight out the back like it is now?

It might echo off the ground more, but inside might be quieter. That's something that would not take much to try out, and return to what you had if it's no good.
