Question Uncoated Headers Burning Plug Wires. Solution?

I just completed my LS6 longblock install this past week and I went with a set of uncoated Hooker shorty headers. I had VERY bad luck with a set of LT’s, so that’s why I went with shorties. I know I should’ve gotten them coated, but I’m just trying to solve the problem for now.

If you have uncoated Hooker shorties, are you burning plug wires? When we did the initial “run-in” (2500 RPM for 20 mins) on the new LS6, the headers turned a nice orange glow from the heat and actually melted my new $70 Taylor Thundervolt 50 wires I just ordered another set of Taylors and I also bought 6” sleeves that are supposed to protect the wires up to 1200 degrees. Should that solve the problem? The wires aren’t actually touching the header, but there’s as little as a ½” of clearance in some spots.

Do headers normally get that hot, or was it just because we were doing the “run-in”? Will the new sleeves solve the problem or just prolong it happening again?

I don't think they should be glowing bright orange; are you sure you're not running really lean?

Man,

If your headers are glowing orange, you're running really lean. Get that taken care of ASAP...

AutoTap says I'm fine now...I don't think I'm running lean. I think they got that hot because they got NO air circulating at all during the run-in. As soon as we started the new LS6 up, the instructions I got said to run it at 2500 RPM for 20 mins at the 1st start-up. The headers did turn a nice orange during those 20 mins. and haven't been that way since. I'll monitor the situation closely, but us '98's usually run rich if anything, but then again, my LS6 needs the larger injectors that the '98's use, so I guess it's possible I'm running lean...

do not trust A-tap for A/F readings, get it on a wide band.

You can get a fiberglass sleeving for plug wires.
That might suffice for the immediate problem.

Another option is to rig some sort of loom or
clippage that keeps the wires from contact.

You aren't supposed to wrap the headers all
the way up to the heads (where the wires
are) as I understand it, they can't take that
kind of heat - like, you wanna go from orange
(that you can see) to yellow (covered up)?

Take them off and get them coated. Then run header wrap sleeves on your plugs.

Dont know if this was meant to me... What was ment was stated in less words than it should have been. I was tryin to say what "bowtieman4life" said by header sleeves for the wires. Or just wrap them with header wrap. Sorry. But let us know what you do.

Thanks,

Actually an orange glowing header means unburnt fuel is getting burnt in the header tube, at least that's what I remember from somewhere...I used to have an old 340 Mopar 71 'Cuda that would do that. It had a big ole lumpy "purple shaft" cam...spec out at like .502 lift and 292 advertised dur. I can't remember the LSA probably 108 or so. Very lumpy.
The headers would glow orange while idling. Yours may not be the same problem.

...well, I am currently running my LS6 on the stock '98 LS1 PCM settings right now. I do plan to get an Ed Wright tune soon, but maybe the incorrent tune might have had something to do with why my headers were glowing orange. The LS6 cam is bigger than the LS1.
