Default magnaflow question

I am considering purchasing a magnaflow catback for my 2001 WS6. Only mods as of now are an air lid and plan on keeping the mods minimal for now. I have heard many things on this catback and want to hear what some magnaflow owners say. first i heard the sound is not much differance from the stock setup when just adding the catback. and second is that some people have said that they lose power by adding this catback. any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks alot

I have a Magnaflow system, and the sound difference is definitely noticeable. Much deeper and louder rumble at idle, and a nice deep growl when you punch it. No loud drone while you're cruising, but you can still def tell the difference from stock.

Let's see...

In the past five years since purchase, I've had the stock 99 SS, Flowmaster AT, SLP LM, SLP LM with Borla XR-1, Mufflex 4" with Flowmaster, SLP TOTL, and the Magnaflow. If the Magnaflow had rolled edges on the tips, it would be perfect. Sound wise, It has the second best sound of any I've had. I give that nod to the 500lb Mufflex system with the sewer pipe exhaust tip. This is with headers and ory pipe. If you're going to run cats, buy the SLP LM:cheap, light, and good HP gain.

Don't get the entire cat-back!
You are swapping 3" mandrel bent, stainless, factory pipes for over priced 3" aftermarket pipes when you could just buy the muffler and get your own tips.
Even if you didn't have the WS6, it is still not worth going from 2.75" mandrel stainless pipes to 3" pipes. .25" isn't where the gain is on our cars... it's the stock muffler.
You have one up on most of us, the WS6 (and as an option on SS) is supposed to be factory with the .25" larger pipe.
Save some dough, and good luck
Dave

i agree with only replacing the muffler on the WS6. but for the rest of us that don't have the 3" stock pipes, it really depends on what you wanna do with your car. for just a little bit better sound and a slight increase in HP/TQ, the muffler swap should probably work fine.

but for people who wanna do more than just minor mods and get some real HP gains, upgrading the tubing size could be considered "future-proofing"

i have an 02 SS and put on the magnaflow muffler if you want a good quiet sounding muffler that barely idles but it gets loud at WOT then go for it but if your like me and like waking people up at 3 in the morning then forget about it.

I had it on my last 01' (just swapped out the stock muffler with the magnflow). I did not care for the sound, but then it's not as bad as others I have heard. Listen to it in person before you decide.

I bought mine from Jeg's for $359 shipped. My the whole catback. Its cheap, stainless steel and 3 inch mandrel bent. Mine still looks new a year later because of the stainless plus it has nice tips and its easy to install. I did it in 1 hour. It's also one of the best sounding and best flowing set up out there. It is deep and powerful sounding without being to loud. I went from 13.3 at 109 to 13.0 at 111 with just this upgrade. I love it!

Keep the WS6 exhaust, it is better than the magnaflow. I Have the Magnaflow cat-back, and wish I never bought it. It sounds louder than stock, which is ok with me. The draw back for me is that I lost 10 rwhp and 5 rwtq when I went from the stock SS exhaust to the Magnaflow. If I did not hack it up taking it off I would have put it back on. #'s on same Dyno SAE corrected.

Stock 305 rwhp 316 rwtq
Magnaflow 295 rwhp 311rwtq

Did you dyno the same day?

I lost 1 hp vs a cut-out through the Magnaflow on a 445 rwhp N/A set up.

I find it very strange(not that I don't believe you), how you lost so much power. Magnaflow is a very free flowing muffler. Im pretty baffled on this one.

I also find it strange how you lost horsepower. i could definately tell a difference in the sound and on the power end. Very good choice in my opinion.

This is the first time I ever heard of someone losing hp by going to a Magnaflow. I would check things out and make sure something else isn't wrong with your car.

Car went to 309 rwhp the same day after LS1 Edit. Did Auto Tap and nothing was wrong with the car. I was floored when I got the results, because my car has always dyno'd consistent.

man, I am shocked about the power loss! I never dynoe'd mine before the changes, nor did I hear my car with the stock manifolds and my magnaflow. I put LT's, Y, and catback all and once, and it was just perfect! Nice low rumble at idle, and really wakes up and roars at WOT. Combine this with the fact that it's Stainless, it's the best buy for the money.

if you want the best catback, get a GMMG!

I like the sound and look of the Magnaflow. Just hate the HP loss. I may change to a LM or GMMG. I should have just gotten the GMMG at the start.

Either someone stuffed a tennis ball in your muffler or something is wrong with your car/tune. Losing hp with the Magnaflow is physically impossible.

Yeah, a tune will help you. With the tune and pulley you should be around 350 or more. I think my car is one of the freaks though. At least that's what one of the guys who works on my car said.
