Default RPM Tach is wacked?!?

My tach is reading 2300 rpms higher while under load and at idle 1000.

Is there a fix for this besides an aftermarket tach?

A tach does not know if you're under load or not. It counts revs. How does it read when revving out of gear?

At idle it shows about 1000-1300 higher. When I rev up or driving when it's supposed to be 2600 rpms it shows it near 4000, at 4500 rpms it's in the high 6's.

What happened when you changed out the stepper motor?

It's been going out like this for a few yrs.


I haven't touched the inside of the cluster.

I never heard of this till you mention this, had to look it up.


I'm betting now this is what it could be, I mean after all the car is 22 yrs old. It can't even keep the dash pad from cracking after 6 months new down here.

I'll look for these, they seem to be cheap so I'll get some and swap them in and report back.

Well Hell, I called Scott Speedometer and he says there are no stepper motors in a 1998 gm product.

They didn't start using them until after 2003

Is this stock? Has it had a 99+ ecm swap done? Was it ever correct since you have owned it? If the car was tuned or the ecm was swapped, it could just be a tach setting in the tune, but I can't say based on info provided.

Tach and ecm are both stock. Only adjustment on the tune was for mph due to the rear being a 8.8 with 4.11 gr.

Well I'm not crazy.


I got an aftermarket tach and it's showing the same as the raptor shift light and what HP tuners shows the engine is reading.





I figure the $78 I spent on the gauge is cheaper test then sending it off to get it checked out/repair for $300. I'll see how this works for me for a while I may send it off when I have the money to spare.

As a patch, have you considered Dakota Digital tach signal converter? You can adjust the signal in converter to tweak the output and correct tach in your cluster.
Is your tach needle at zero with key on engine off? If not, maybe you just need to move needle down? Just guessing here.

Well if the aftermarket tach is also reading off, then the source is confused. Sounds like the tach setting in the tune needs corrected. It's very simple.

The aftermarket (AM) tach, the Raptor shift light both read correct, it's the cars tach that is off. I know you can adjust the speedo in the software but I don't think the rpm can. It just reads the inputs and reports. The ecm is reading the same as the AM tack and Shift light when you look at it thru Hptuners.


This AM tach was more of a temp but may end up as a permanent fix. Spent $79 for it vs $300 to send the cluster out and have it fixed, with no guarantee it could be fixed.
