Default Installing headers

I'm thinking of buying headers, and I'm wondering how hard they are to install.
From what I hear it is not an easy job on these lS1's.
Also, I only want to spend around $400 on headers. Would I be better off tring to find a used set or get less expensive new ones?

Thanks for the help.

They're not as hard to install as you think. Took me about 6-7 hours by myself. Just search and find the install guides. If you're mechanically inclined, you'll get it done just fine.

I'd recommend the coated Pacesetters, new or used, in that price range. Mine new cost only 375+shipping.

Look over here -------------------------------------------->
and you might find some prices.

it depends on what you have in mind for a ypipe. are you going true duals or getting a ypipe? on the ls1s i installed headers on they werent too bad, the tab on the block that has to be cut is the hardest part of the headers, but as far as the ypipe goes it is the biggest pain in the butt!! also its more than $400 with the ypipe or true duals.

Thanks for the help.
Could you elaborate a bit on this tab that has to be cut off the block?

my pacesetters were 375 and only took me 4 hours to install. no grinding of the k membere, or jacking of the engine, i went with TSP duals, and that took about 1.5 hours.

If you are not lowered then, you will have no issues. Most headers tuck up really nice and give good clearance. If you are in the $400 range, the Pacesetter's will be your best bet. The headers aree asy to install. Just give yourself plenty of time for the first time.

Driver side of the block you will see a square block sticking out. You will have to cut that and also you might have to trim your K member as well. There are some pics floating around of each.

The install isn't bad, just take your time and be happy knowing the job was done right. Should take about 8 hours if it is your first time and you have help.

for hat price range, the Pacesetters are your best choice. MAke sure you get them coated. Also, i think the Pacesetters have just been recently redesigned making the installation free of any other mod, but im not exactly sure. Installation of the passenger side is quicker than the driver because of clearance. But, take your time and read everything, get pictures, watever..just make sure your "ready" to do it...its not that hard. Only on the knuckles!!!

My only concern is the y-pipe issue. If anything, that is the piece that will give you the hardest time imo.......if your not lowered, that you wouldnt need to tweek so much.....

only the SLP headers will give you bad ground clearance. A for the rest, as long as your not on sportlines or a 2" drop, most all headers will tuck nice. The y-pipe or x-pipe is wat hangs a bit but no more than the stock pipe. I scrap the stock pipe on some unappropriately high speed bumps, just take them at an angle and slow down some. If you take your time though, you can tweek the pipes to actually tuck nicely like the headers, its not that difficult just possibly frustrating at times...

My car is lowered. Im not sure how much because i've only had it for about 3 months. It is very low though. My car still has the stock Y. Should I get a aftermarket Y as well? Seems like Pacesetters has the vote! Thanks Guys!

My vote is coated Pacesetters but don't buy their y-pipe. If you are not going duals, have a y-pipe custom made or get TSP's. Good luck.

Well would I be better off with duals or with a Y. The problem is I just bought a corsa muffler because I like the sound of corsa. I have never heard true duals. What mufflers do most use with duals? Are duals better for power?

I'm pretty sure what he is talking about is the little block off plate above the oil filter. It is held on by two smalls bolts. Just remove them and the plate falls out of the way. Some oil will leak out if you don't drain the pan first. heh...Don't forget to put it back after you are done putting the headers on.

I installed some of the Jet Hot Hooker copies on my 02 Z28 and nothing rubs. They fit perfectly with no grinding or cutting anywhere. The coating still looks good and no rust to date. That probably has more to do with what part of the country you live in. Either way...Jet Hot has a lifetime warranty against rust. They will recoat them for free, but you will be out the shipping.

Good luck.

Chad

No, the block tab is a piece of casting flash that's on the block. It's above the oil filter all right, but much higher, just below the head. You'll see it.

People have said that their Pacesetters slipped right in without cutting it, some have said the opposite. I had to cut mine, but only a little bit. A few minutes with a sawzall and it's done.

Just be careful and don't cut into your head.

You will know which tab needs to be cut when the header won't get past it. You can either cut it off, or you can take the motor mount bolt out and lift the motor with a floor jack causing the motor to roll up and out of the way.

From installing my headers and talking to others/reading post..... I do not think that it is neccessary to cut off the casting tab...

When I installed my headers I thought I was going to have to, but I just kept putting the header in at different angles and all of a sudden BOOM they fit right in...

If you do not want to mess around with fitting them in there several different ways, then it may save you time/patience to cut off the casting tab.... But it is not 100% neccessary

it all depends on the car, and on if your using a lift or not, on the 2 long tube installs i did you HAD to remove the tab, there was NO way of getting around it i tried everything. but with a lift i think you can get the headers to go vertical and it will go around the tab or if you had huge jack stands, there was no way for me to get them vertical at all so i did what i had to do, only took like 10min to cut off anyway, the sawsaw barely fits in there but works.
