Default ypipe with single muffler dumped before axle?

Just wondering if anyone has a setup like this. I've heard sound clips of this on ls1sounds.com but that doesn't give it any justice. http://www.ls1sounds.com/custom.htm

LTs, no cats, 3" ypipe, single muffler dumped.
1)Is it raspy during acceleration? Raspy like the loud-mouth with LTs & no cats which sounds really gay.
2)How does it sound at idle, wot, & highway speed?
3)Performance?
4)Would you recommend this to anyone?
5)Which muffler would you use with this setup?

-Thanks

I thought about that too. Someone should give it a try.

I would use a delta flow 10 series flowmaster or a sweet thunder.

I have seen one car like that, it had a magnaflow as well, it did hang low though, im not sure where you could hang a full size muffler down there and have good clearence in that area.

Pics seem to work now. I've been thinking of doing the same thing myself. I really need to get rid of my 2.5" duals and I really don't want to spend the money to build a good all around 3" system with dual cutouts. I think I might just pick up a cheap 3" y-pipe, 2 cutouts, and a 24" Sweet Thunder muffler. Seems like it would be a light and simple set up. I'm just not sure how the car will sound, the 24" Sweet Thunder should keep things under control but I'm really not sure. I'll also be able to run an extreme torque arm which is a huge plus for me.

If you're gonna dump it under the car anyways, why not use true duals?

That's what I plan on doing as soon as I can scrape up some $$.

for me it was 1. weight, 2. cost.

cutouts will gain high end over duals all day and at the track the car never drops below 4500rpms

How about this:

right after the Y, split the 3" pipe back into two 2.5" pipes and run both bullets down the passenger side. The Back to back Y pipes will function similarly to a siamesed X pipe. Its a cheap way to do true duals for not much more money than what youre already looking at.

If you're gonna do that, just buy a Dr. Gas X-pipe with 3" in and 2.5" out. It'll take up the same if not less room, and will be cheaper. Those Flowmaster Y's are like $60 a piece last I remember.

Dosnt need to be a flowmaster or a doctor X. any shop with a grinder and a welder can do it for you easily.

OKAY, ive prolly put more thought into this then anyone nad posted many questions in here already.. i have a cutout on the end of my ypipe and i am about to replace it with a bullet or something similar and a turndown.. i have macs and ory.. i figure it will save me money this way and i can sale my catback to easily make up for the cost of bullet/turndown, vs duals which can get expensive fairly easily... i figure it will flow as good as a open cutout since the muffler is a straight thru.

You might as well just start from scratch, but an exhaust shop should be able to reuse the two front pieces. High quality X-pipes like the Dr.Gas and Hedman's start at about $100 and the labor will probrably not be cheap. As for home made X pipes, if your looking to make really good power they are not up to the task. Believe me, I have one.

If anything, maybe put a merge collector at the end of the Y to try and get some more flow out of it.

My Dad has a homemade X from a "good" performance exhaust shop in the area on his 82 Vette, and I've had a Dr. Gas pipe in the past on my 'bird. I can say with confidence that the Dr. Gas is worth the extra money.
