Default Why is my serpentine belt coming off?

It's come off twice in a day when I take a freeway cloverleaf. It never did this before. I hear a little noise from the power steering pump. The first time it wrecked my belt. I bought a new belt and the first clover leaf I took it came off. I checked the fluid in my power steering resevoir and it was nearly full.

What gives?

Do you have an underdrive pulley by chance? Either way I would replace the tensioner, but if you have an underdrive pulley, check out Thunder Racing for a billet Katech adjustable one, you'll need it then.

No under drive pulley. I have a stock circumfrence "fluid dampner" balancer though.

Take your belt off the car and check if the tensioner has any play in it from top to bottom. If it does replace it.

Just buy the Katech pulley or get the Larry pulley. The tensioner was a horrible design by GM, no need for tension on any pulley. Depending on how much power you have a good pulley will not hold the belt. I tried two brand new ones and it didn't matter, when I wacked the throttle and checked it it was halfway off each time. One more hit and it might have come off. Luckily I noticed it one day when I checked my oil. Got the Katech pulley and it hasen't budged since, it simply can't.

It came off again tonight going through a tunnel on the freeway. I was just cruising at 65mph. I couldn't go back and get it. There's $25 down the drain.

Are you sure you seated everything correctly? If one pulley/tensioner is not seated all the way down then it will easily throw a belt all the time.

The gatorback brand serp belts supposedly stay on the pulleys better.

The belt isn't the problem and a Gatorback belt is NO better than a regular brand belt IF YOU HAVE A GOOD TENSIONER or you may need the Katech if you have too much power.

To throw a belt at a steady cruise you have a BAD tensioner, or it was almost off to begin with from earlier in the day and finally worked its way off.

I think it was $139.00 or something like that, can't remember.
