160* Stat.... Um... yeah
Well I know there has and always will be a debate on the need for a 160* Stat. Well just got mine and threw it in. For you guys out there who don't know (I just found out) the stock gauges are crap. All this time my temp gauge would run at around 210. But my oil temp (Auto Meter)gauge would always fluctuate and sometimes go up to high 240s. On my HPTuner my car water temp would get as hot as 230's. Since putting in my 160 stat my temp (via HPtuner) has not exceeded 190 even though my water temp gauge on the car still says around 210. Where I notice it the most is on my oil temp gauge. My oil temp has not gotten over 210 since the thermostat change. That in itself is why I'm giving it .

The 230 temps are due more to stock fan settings than the stock stat. You can get even the stock stat to maintain 19X temps no problem with the proper fan tuning.
The 160 stat will still heat up if idling though traffic with stock fan settings.

Well I got news for you fellas... Horist dropped my fans for me when I was learning to use my HPTuner and it dropped about 10*. He told me to get a lower stat. I was in traffic today and it only got (oil temp) to 215* or so. Sorry my bad I thought I mentioned the fact that I used the HPTuner ot adjust the fans.

I was able to get my stock stat to run coolant temps in the mid-190 range (confirmed via scanner) no problem with lower fan settings (stock stat starts to open around 180* or so). A 160 stat should be able to run as cool as ~172 (+/- a couple degrees) with proper fan settings.

That's what I'm doing soon...only because I'm a control freak. I like to know what's going on with my motor at all times(even though I know the car isn't overheating or anything)

The cars weren't the only "idiot" lighted water temped vehicles.
My Dad's Duramax 3500 is also idiot lighted. The Water temp sits at 210* as soon as actaul water temp hits 190 or so, and stays at 210 untill the water temp hits 240 then it heads up towards the red.
Thanks GM. (Atleast GM has working oil pressure gauges... Unlike Dodge and Ford.

Some like to run their temps lower though, for that you need the 160 stat.

You know.... I guess its because I have a cammed car that I got such stupid temps. Cammed guys run hotter. All this time I thought my oil temp sender mounted in the oil filter adapter was mounted to close to my LTs so I thought I was getting a false reading. Not till I put in the stat did I realize my gauge is dead on. Scary because my oil temp reached 240's at times and I know oil breaks down a hell of a lot sooner than that.
