The X makes more power, and there's so little difference in sound - X is the way to go.

I don't know if its the quietest, but I have an x-pipe with Magnaflow part # 10416 mufflers and it is probably the quietest TD's I've heard in person.

Aye. A 3" setup will be deeper than a 2.5". A comparison of a 2.5" X setup to a 3" H setup is not a fair comparison. The H setup will be deeper mainly from the bigger pipe size.

My friend's 79 Z28 with 2.5" duals dumped at the axle with an H and Flowmaster 40's sounded awesome, but it wasn't any deeper in sound than my car. And let's not forget that a 350 naturally has a deeper tone because of the iron block and different firing order. His car had 10:1 compression and was about even with a near stock LT1 power wise too.

just to update you all, i now have the setup listed in my sig installed, and it sounds very low and old school muscular, and when its at WOT i almost feel like the car is gonna rip in half cause it sounds so powerful! I love it and I would say that the Dr. Gas sounds far more throaty than any other exhaust setup ive heard for these cars. Also, the sound is very dependent on the mufflers. Bullets will offer more rasp, so go with a spiral flow or flo-pro twister

I saw the dyno graph with X vs. H and I was pleased with the results. Even if you make more power with the X, it ain't much apparently. I'm kinda going middle-of-the-road with my TD getup... stock 2 3/4" I-pipe(2 of'em) over the axle, with a "fat" H-pipe, tied into the stock Y for now. That'll change with headers.

My homemade H-pipe:

Both will make similar, if not exact PEAK power - but - the X will make more power across the board.
