i have been pulled over several times for it and gotten 1 ticket so far... yesterday at my work we had a rockford fosgate (sp?) guy come around and he mesured my exhuast at the side of my car (It dumps at the axle) it was 142.6 decibles loud! not bad hehe, anyone else have their exhaust mesured? i wonder how loud it would be at the end of the pipe

I'm sure around 100 is past the legal limit.

I think I heard somewhere that anything over 120 will cause hearing damage? Anyway 142 is really LOUD!
Edit I thought this was good - "Standing behind a jet aircraft on take off would cause one to experience sound levels in excess of 140 dBA"

Any reason you aren't running a crossover?

Hi folks
I hope you know how to use hand signs because at that levels you are going to need them. It may sound good but it isn't healthy for you or your passengers. I am surprised you only have one ticket - that is a big magnet for the police. I would think about some other system.
Just my 2 cents

Depends on what mic was used to take the reading and which frequencies it was picking up as to how accurate of a number that is. Even on a loose mic that is still pretty loud, but probably about right for a LOUD street car. I'd imagine with a real mic at ear level if you happen to be standing next to the car, it would probably be 120 dB or so.

Motorcycles have different requirements than do cars, at least here in Texas (I am a licensed State Inspector).

Some other things motorcycles dont have (so you arent caught off guard again):

4 wheels
seatbelts
catalytic converters
backup lights

Harely is a very common fallback. Fact is harley's are F-ing loud and nobody ever seems to care enough to do anything about it. Unfortunately that really doesn't matter.

My car is freaking loud and I have Harley's drown me out all the time. Fact of the matter is, cars can't be too loud for a reason which I'm guessing is disturbing other motorists, Harley's or any motorcycle shouldn't be any different.

Really!? I didn't know these things.

A car can be over the legal db. limit and still be equipped with emmissions. Most catbacks are pushing the limit in most states on stock manifolds. I'm a LEO and I understand why we have the laws that we do but the number of people that like a loud car is probably quite small compared to the people who like a quiet car.

Where are you going with that? Are you implying that a loud car is illegal because most people don't like cars (or their car?) to be loud? Most people also probably don't like fast cars.....

To the other guy: why do motorcycles have different requirements? Whly should they be allowed to make so much more noise than cars?

I'm implying that the majority of people probably prefer a quieter car. Why do we have all of these threads about exhuast, volume, and rasp? People are tempermental about their cars, road noise, exhaust, etc. etc. etc. and cars today are being engineered to run even quieter. I've been in cars where you couldn't even tell the engine was running. Tell me, what would the roads be like if everyone drove a V-8 car with LT's, ORY, and a Loudmouth? I'm sure you've heard loud V8 cars passing by your house or near where your live, think if everyones car was like that.

The sound of a healthy V8 is as annoying to some as a fart can equipped 4 cyl. is to us. I'm not saying I like or dislike the laws, just trying to see and explain the reason behind them.

I'd be happy if every car was a healthy V8. LT's, ORY and loudmouth isn't a healthy sound though.
