Just wondering this as the wires can still go on with or w/o them. Do you guys still use the metal boot protector/springs w/ MSD-any aftermarket wires?

When I had the MSD Super Conductor wires, I couldn't fit the metal boot protectors on, so I left them off...didn't have a problem.

I got them to fit by pushing the MSD boot a little bit out farther, I'm pretty sure those boots can take the heat I just want to make sure they're not gonna melt or something w/o the metal pieces, especially with uncoated headers

I didnt use them, but they wouldnt fit on my Thundervolts. If they fit then I'd imagine there is no reason not to use them.

Wouldn't fit my Taylors. No problems yet, though. The aftermarket wires have a much thicker boot which while it prevents the protectors from sliding on also protects against burning through.

Accel 9000 wires here for 3 years, no stock heat covers. Never tried to see if they would fit. I'm running Stainless Works headers.

I didn't use the stock metal boot protectors with my MSDs simply because they didn't fit them like they did the stock wires. The sparkplug boot on the MSD wire is just a common MSD straight sparkplug boot, so it wasn't designed to work with the metal boot protectors. If you want a wire that is compatible with the metal boot protectors, as far as I know, only the Moroso Ultra 40s and the supposedly 0 resistance Granatellis will work. In the near future, I was thinking of swapping to the Morosos because they look good, have less resistance, and guard off heat better than the MSDs. Hope this helps some.

You don't need the metal boot covers. I'm currently running Taylor 8mm wires, but I ran MSD 8.5s for 2 years until I changed plugs broke 1 of them. For 2 years 1 of my MSD boots was right up against the header and never showed any signs of melting. I was very impressed with the quality of the MSDs.

I have MSD wires on both my 98 Z28 and the wife's 2000 SS. Neither car has the metal covers. I have MAC headers on the 98 and SuperMAXX headers on the 2000. No problems at all with the wires. You don't need them. Just toss them out.

Taylor 8mm Spiro wires, no metal boot shields, all fine and good.
