Default Operating temp down aroun 155* at highway speeds

Looks like i may have a problem with my thermostat staying open. My operating temp goes down to around 155 on the highway. Anything I can do to rebuild the stocker since I hate to spend 50 bucks on a simple thermostat especially since id stay with the stock 187* stat anyway.

Rebuild a t-stat? Never heard of anyone doing that....ever. I'd just get a new one.

I mean the thermostat is such a cheap piece, it sucks to buy a new housing. I havnt popped it out yet, maybe theyre just some junk lodged in there.

I'm having the same prob. At 55* IAT (w/FRA) today my
ECT would not get above 172* while cruising @ 1600
rpms (about 65 or so?).
I don't believe my tranny temps went over 130*.
Even after driving 38 miles, cruising around town briefly
in stop & go, and cruising home my ECT via Autotap
never went over 182 (briefly) or thereabouts.
I do have a self-modified Tstat.
My trans cooler is still plumbed post-radiator
(I usually reverse this in winter).
I don't know what you can do to an "untampered with"
Tstat, but I'm going to pull mine back apart and remove
the shim I used to convert to a lower opening temp,
change the trans cooler plumbing until summer.
If your Tstat is sticking, take it off, pull it apart (carefully-
that's one hell of a spring in there), clean everything up
especially the orifice that the bottom of the Tstat rides in.
If there's any crud in there it could hold the stat open a
little all the time.

Woah....before you order that..... From what I understand the '04-up LS1 & LS2 use an updated water pump that also requires a different stat. I beleive this $25 piece is the newer stat. I don't think that will fit on an F-body LS1.
