Default some exhaust questions

I'm looking to gain a bit of power, and definitely a nice sound. I heard just replacing the muffler with a dynomax bullet race muffler I could gain 8-12, but I saw this clip

http://ls1sounds.com/Flowmaster/flow...er_stockTA.MPG

And I think it sounds just like what I want, but I have a hard time beleiving all they replaced was the muffler. It looks like the exhaust is coming out of both tips, but on the stock TAs isn't one tip just for show?

And also will this gain me as much power as the dyno muffler and will they cost the same to buy/have installed?

One last question- someone said the dynomouth was just replacing the muffler, but on ls1sounds.com it said-

"This is a homemade system. Typically it is the result of someone who purchases the SLP Loudmouth cat-back, then gets tired of how loud it is so they swap in a Dynomax Bullet muffler in place of the Loudmouth Resonator, hence the name Dynomouth."

whioch ones right?

Flowmaster sounds great to some, but it's proven to be one of the most restrictive catbacks available.
Dynomouth = Loudmouth - Resonator + Dynomax Bullet (replaces resonator).

Miami Muffler in South Dade can fab one up for you no probem. Actually, they can make any freakin' exhaust configuration you want on site.

isn't there a difference between flowmaster cat backs and flowmaster mufflers?

I was kinda hoping the muffler wasn't as restrictive.

The single in/dual out muffler used in the catback is the chokepoint. The actual routing of our catback's piping isn't restrictive per se- it all comes down to muffler selection.

alright just saw another video-

http://ls1sounds.com/headers_cutouts...tock_98Z28.MPG

Edit: the link says headers, but ls1sounds says stock headers, stock pipe, flowmaster mufflers, and 3'' cutout.

I think that sounds really great, I'm not sure how much of a differnece in sound the muffler should make when the cut out is open, but the car definitely sounds a lot meaner than all of the other stock/cut-out LS1s I've heard. If I were to try to shoot for this sound and a ~10 HP gain should I get a single or dual cut out and where would be the best place to put em?

Thanks for all the help

Of course you like that sound!- That's the cutout open, not the Slowmaster.

One cutout in the I-pipe right under the passenger seat niche (it's hard not to locate it- it's perfect for a cutout).
2 cutouts involves more skilled fabbing in the Y-pipe, plus you lose ground clearance.
1 is all you need really.

Good luck!
If you like that deep tone, check out Hooker and Magnaflow.

Forget the flowmaster, you wont gain anything although it will sound good. Also, the flowmaster is a full catback system, not just a muffler, but you can just have one welded in and keep the stock exhaust piping. Id suggest getting a hooker aerochamber or magnaflow muffler welded in and get a cutout after the cat in the I-pipe like SouthFl said. The cutout will sound very similar to the LM catback, and then if you want it quiet you can cap the cutout and run it through the muffler. That way your not paying out the *** for an entire system. If you do decide to go with a full exhaust get true duals, they will sound better and produce more power.

an entire cat back system would be too expensive for me. I only have 400 bucks, no job and I owe my parents 500 more for the car and I'm paying for gas. So I need a job, then the cheaper exhaust system I like. Thanks a lot.

yeah, if I had money I'd get kooks LTs and an x pipe.

BTW how will a cutout affect my o2 sensors? I'm pretty sure they're going bad, I try to cruise at under 1500 rpms and when accelerating keep it under 2 grand (its an auto so I don't have that much control) and I'm still getting like 13mpg. So I might want those replaced soon, and will this affect any of my plans for the exhaust set up?

It shouldnt, when i first got my car I had a cutout int he I-pipe throught he stock muffler and ran 15K miles on it no problems at all. Didnt even set of an ses code and I ran it open all the time. If your planning on keepingcats id wait till you have the money for headers as you can then decide if you want to keep cats or not. You can also find some pretty good deals on used systems in the parts for sale section of the board. usually you can pick up an slp LM for under $200 bucks used, and its all stainless so it wont be rusted out or anything. But yea the cutout will be like 40 bucks, have that and a magnaflow or hooker aerochamer welded in and it should cost you around $150 bucks total.

oh wow didnt even realize you had 02 sensor not cat written. I dunno my 02 sensors went bad a while ago and I got 02 simms now with my gutted cats. However when they went bad I didnt really realize any diff in performance. Some people say they matter, others dont, id say just get the cutout and muffler and run that and if you feel like theres a diff in performance or the car isnt feeling right then replace the 02 sensors.

Check out the TSP RUMBLER ($279) -------> Texas Speed (great price, can't get any cheaper than that), sounds good too.

I too, for cost savings, initially swapped out the stock muffler with a Spintech 3"in/3" dual out.

Then,
Miami Muffler built me these for $450 installed a couple years ago. 3" Mandrel bent aluminized (meanest, baddest setup I've heard yet on any car). I later swapped out those Flowtech Afterburners for some Magnaflow 4x9's to quiet things down.

My final, favorite, and surprisingly very very high flowing setup was this:

Listen to ls1sounds very well. That resource wasn't up and running when I made my first 3 decisions. I did consult it for the SLP 2OTL and was very happy with my choice.

Good luck!
