I did it to my ws6 I think it feels better. if anything it makes air go inside intake w/ less restriction which, means increasa of rpm's quiker. as 4 hp gain, very minimal if any.

The Ram Air kits are worth the $$$, but you can do the FRA first till you decide to buy one. Just don't get to crazy with your cutting

Only bad thing about the free ram air is that a lotta dirt gets in the filter, so if you do it be sure and clean the filter every couple days.

do it, it's only a 5-10 minute job anyways if you have a dremel. if you want somethin better...you've already got the hole cut out for a kit, so it's a win-win situation. try, if not satisfied, all you gotta do is buy the kit and drop it in. i've done FRA and i have an MTI lid on top and i'm satisfied.

I'm not sure if I noticed any difference when I did it, but I had the car hooked up to HP Tuners back in September when my gears were installed, and the guy said my iat was like 170

I think you're asking about the free ram air where you cut the bottom of the air box and suck air in that way. I don't have experience with that but I did create my own ram air box for about $10 and maybe an hour of work from starting measurements to closing the hood. Here's a couple pictures of what I did...
http://www.fastls1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9912
It uses the existing nostrils for air intake. I also removed the water baffles in the notrils for better flow.
As for performance gains it's tough to say as it'll only benefit at speed but it can't hurt. I will say that when logging with HP Tuners my iat's were within 3-5 degrees of outside temperature. I did this in the fall so it wasn't too hot here in NY so I'm curious to check my iat's in the summer.
If you're interested I have a microsoft word right up of this type of install that I got from a member of this board. It'll give you and idea about the construction and install of this type of box. Good luck with whatever you do, any way to get more air, especially cooler air, into your motor is a good thing.

Yes, it's worth it. One of the problem with this mod is that during staging or traffic your IAT temps will be high without a CAI kit. I now run the SSRA but did the Free Ram Air Mod alone for years. If you have edit or HP tuners you can eliminate the timing retard for the IAT table.
