Default Quick Facts about headers everyone needs to know.

This is mainly a thread for people to post all the small questions about headers that havent had a direct answer to. Feel free to post a question you may have. Maybe someone can make a writeup and make it a sticky?

My question is, I have a 01 Z and im wanting headers. I live in NC which deals with emissions testing. If I put pacesetter headers with the ORY pipe and the sims, will it pass emissions testing? If not what do I need to pass besides a catted Y? Thanks in advance.

Ive searched this forum up and down and havent seen anything about this.

You can always weld in fake cats if you have a visual inspection. Otherwise if they just check for codes you have nothing to worry about.

Every state's laws are different. In chicago, I've never had them look under a car, they just plug it in and get the readings. Sometimes, they don't even get that far. My brother's Saturn has the SES light on, he was failed just at the sight of it. in other counties in Illinois, the restrictions vary.

You should find out the laws from where you are, and how much they test. They will plug into the OBD2, but ask around if they do visuals or sniffers.

I'm in NC too and I keep hearing mixed responses but I believe that depending on what part of the state you are in they don't have the sniffer test yet. So Hopefully I'll be good.

Which county are you in?

I'm in Stokes, and as long as my car isn't throwing a code, it'll pass emissions. (No EGR, No AIR, No Cats, Cammed with true duals!)

I am in the St. Louis area where emissions are very strict. I am running Pacesetter LTs to the Pacesetter ORY to Hooker catback with no cats. It was kinda funny because I went to the testing place and I was standing inside the waiting area and they started my car up to move it forward to their computers. The whole place reaked of gasoline and the guy next to me even asked me if I was running some kind of racing fuel. They hooked up their computer to the OBDII, scanned it, and came and handed me my paper saying I passed! I think you will be fine!

I checked with several inspection stations prior to installing headers (Lee County). They all told me that if the cats were there and there were no codes they would pass it. I'll find out for sure in April when my inspection is due. It didn't throw any codes after the install but while I was tuning I had all of the appropriate potential code deleted. I will have to take the tops out and roll the windows down because none of them would pass me with the window tint, only 18%.

I wouldn't get the o2 sims, you should go to a shop to tune your computer or buy your own software (which is the smartest thing to do if you have lots of plans for your car). That way you can have all the codes deleted and to make all the readiness codes to show "ready" for your test.

When you take off your AIR, EGR, rear o2's, the computer will test the "readiness" of these componets to see if they are working correctly. With the tuning software you can set all the readiness codes to show "ready" regardless if they really are or not.

96-00 cars cannot have more than 2 "not ready" codes.
01+ cars cannot have more than 1 "not ready" code.

If your car has too many "unready" codes, it does not fail, you just have to go back to the place at another time and take the test again. We dont have sniffer tests here in North Carolina. The only thing you have to worry about is to find someone who will overlook the visual part of the test for not having cats and emissions components.
