dump to single muffer before axle? I have stock manifold and cats. I was thinking of adding a flowmaster 3" collector to my SLP Y-Pipe and dumping to a single 3" inlet bullet-type muffler with 3" outlet with single dump before the axle. I was thinking that looking from the car underneath there is enough of a hump by the passenger side next to the driveshaft where a bullet muffler could fit. I was thinking maybe some sound deadening could quiet any internal resonance. Would it be too much/not enough restriction for the exhaust flow?
I want to be somewhat streetable - i.e not a cop magnet. I can live with it being loud at WOT... I live in Virginia if that matters any. Is it legal to dump your exhaust before the axle in Virginia?

Re: dump to single muffer before axle? It will basically sound like running with an open Y pipe, with maybe a 10% reduction in noise.
A Spintech muffler or Dynomax Ultra-flow Welded round muffler would give you some sound attenuation and either might still fit there.

Re: dump to single muffer before axle? Flowmaster sounds great but the flow is not very good. If I was to do it over. I would have cut off my stock exhaust. Keep my stock cats and Y. Then I would have bought a Dynatech Splitflow muffler and dumpped it right before the axle. The Split flow muffler is awsome and has a super deep tone. I have A Split flow muffler on my car now. It's on a 3" off road Y, into a single 3.5" with a dump before the axle. I have no nasty rasp and the tone is very deep. It is a strait through muffler, and I was very impressed with the sound reduction. The car sounds AWSOME!!! Every body that hears my car is very impressed. Heres the link. Re: dump to single muffer before axle? OHH yea, I got the bigger oval Splitflow. I had to slightly angle the muffler to the passanger side for drive shaft clearance. Then hammerd the floor board in alittle. <Where the back seat dips down.>
From the inside. You can barly notice the place where the floor was hammerd. The hammerd spot is in the corner and the carpet hids the bump very well. No one will notice anything exept the bad as rumble of your exhaust.
