Help Gutting My Cats
My SES light came on for a random misfire, turns out my cats are restricted. I'd like to do this as cheap as humanly possible, so I'm planning on gutting my cats and buying used O2 sensors. My state has no inspections, so I'm not concerned about emmissions.
The driver's side cat looks like it unbolts from the rest of the exhaust pretty simply, but what about the passenger side? Does it just slide out of the Y-pipe, or is it welded on and is there no way to get to the inside of it without sawing it off and welding it back on? I cannot weld and do not want to pay someone else to do it.
Also, does anyone know the size of the bolts for the cats? I'm sure mine will break and I'd like to have replacements ready when I do it.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Don't gut the cats. All you'll be doing is creating two expansion chambers, which will cause turbulent exhaust flow, and make your car noticeably louder.
PB Blaster IS good stuff. If it doesn't work, and you can't get the cats off, pull the entire y-pipe, and have a shop fab up an off-road y-pipe if you don't feel like dealing with cats anymore. It can't be any more expensive than replacing cats.

put a pipe thru the cat and weld it to make it unturbulent! lol

unbolt the y-pipe from each manifold and gut it out that way. just make sure you have passenger side turned upside down so all the stuff you hack out doesn't go into the ypip and get stuck. 98 and 99 cars have the removable drivers cat from the y pipe and the passenger cat is part of the ypipe. 2000 and up have both cats removable from the ypipe. i just gutted my girlfiends cats on her 2000 trans am. you'll need manifold to ypipe gaskets. i got mine from gm for 16 bux(both sides). i only did this because she wanted it louder and couldn't afford an ory at the time. so it's only temp. it doens't sound bad. she has a borla and runs it open. she also gained 6 rwhp by doing this and it even still has that flat ypipe in it but i heard that flows just as good as the slp ypipe.
