Default Fuel gauge inaccurate??

My gauge read lil under half today, so i went to fill her up. when it was full, the gas pump read that i had pumped only 7.7 gallons of gas. Has anybody ever payed any attention to the gauge compared to what you just pumped in your tank?

has anybody ever adjusted their gauge according to the what the gas pump read? Like, you remembered where the gas gauge read, and the next time it was at that point, you moved the pointer to where it SHOULD BE?

Just wanted to bring that up, it may be stupid, but its worth trying? any input?

i think that mine is really off, if i am correct in saying that we have a 15 gal. tank, then when my gas light is on and it only takes 9 gals. to fill up. i figured that i would just have to live with it and that it was not worht the time to take it to the dealer.

My gas gauge was off from the factory it's a common problem with GM cars I just go by the trip meter and refill every 225 miles.

What i was gonna try is removing the gauge pin, and placing it where it belongs. I dont know if anybody would really like to take the time and do it, but I think im gonna try it. i was thinkin about takin it down to half tank, then fillin it up, to see how much gas i put in, then adjusting the gas gauge accordingly. It may take a few tries, but least it would be a lil more accurate than it really is, then i could see how much mileage i get to a full tank.

So, where ever you decide to put the needle, thats where its gonna read. Like i said, i dont know what futility means, its not a cop word, and i may have misunderstood you.

I agree with the idea that I've never seen an accurate fuel gauge. I just be sure to fill up when it hits a 1/4 tank. And as far as trying to calculate gas mileage from the gauge-won't happen. What-did you think you bought a beemer?
J/K. I've filled on 1/4 tank and put 11 gallons in, I've filled on 1/4 tank and put 12.5 in. (16 gallon tank if I remember right).

You guys all have good points..maybe i should just leave the gauge well enough alone. with my luck, i'll probably set it to where i think its right, and i'll run out of gas at 1/2 tank..
