Default Can someone help out a newbie please!

Alright guys, I'm planning on getting in on a fantastic group buy for Hooker LT's, only problem is that I'm a newbie, and really dont know EXACTLY what I need. Let me give you a rundown of what I have, and maybe you can give me some tips and advise on which route I should take.

Its a 99 Z28, I have to be able to pass emissions. I know they just plug into the OBDII's in our cars and see if we're throwing a code, but I'm also worried about a visual inspection. Right now all I have is a custom dynomouth exhaust...I have a 12" bullet welded in on the i-pipe before the driveshaft, would that pass for a cat?

I'm getting, like I said, the Hooker long tubes and the y-pipe through the group buy. What else would I need do you think. I was told o2 simms......what else? Thanks for your help in advance!

Larry....All you're going to need is O2 simms if you're going to run a off road y pipe. Of course the off road Y isnt going to pass inspection and I doubt the bullet muffler you have will pass as a cat....Or at least in wouldn't here in Dallas.

You will need a custom y pipe with cats on it. I am in on the group purchase and it is awesome for the money. And the O2 sims with make it so you dont throw a code but you will get busted on the visuals.

I know that emissions is setup in Arizona the same way it is in Illinois pretty much (just moved from ILL). Should I buy the headers/y-pipe, then just have it all put on, and when 2004 comes around, weld in the stock, gutted cats on the offroad pipe?

Basically any type of LT headers you are not going to be emissions compliant. Long Tube headers cause the cats to be relocated (if you have them) which fails inspection.

The only type of headers avaliable that you can get and remain emissions legal are shorty headers, which dont offer much gain compared to the stock manifold. The exhaust manifold on the 01's and 02s flow pretty good. There was a guy who had pictures of them and they look alot like shorty headers already.

Basically you cant go LT headers and expect to pass emissions. HTH

The only thing we do in AZ for emissions is plug into the OBDII, see if any codes are thrown. If you come rumbling into the station, they'll take that mirro and look under you car for cats.

So my question is, with long tube headers, could I still get cats on the car via a custom fabricated y-pipe?!

Ok, here's the plan everyone. Let me know what you think!

Hooker LT headers, mufflex y-pipe, and 2 random tech cats to be welded on the y-pipe!!!

Basic setup, again, any info or advise would be appreciated!

I think the Random Tech high flow cats are some of the best flowing and shortest ones available. The thing you have to be sure of is that the y-pipe is not too long after welding on the cats.
I used the Random Techs with SLP long tubes and their y-pipe which was designed to work with the cats and headers, so it all clamped in place.
I am not familiar with the y-pipe you are getting, but if you take your car to a muffler shop and have the cats welded on the y-pipe, they can ensure that it all goes together correctly, otherwise it may not fit properly between the header collector tube and your intermediate pipe. If someone else has used this y-pipe and cat combo with the Hooker long tubes, please chime in.
When in doubt, you can always take it to a shop to have it fabricated and installed. Hope this helps.
