Default Temp guage reads the same with 160 stat and HPP3.

Ive got the 160º powerstat and the Hypertech Power Programmer 3 and the temperature guage still reads 195º. I did all the directions correctly when doing the programming. Please help!

I have a 98 Z and I think those are the only ones that the gauge reads accurately....I put in a 160 hypertech stat and it read correctly....it just sits slightly above 160 but not even to the midpoint..much less 210!.....I don't have the hp3 either!....but the other years 99+...they say its a dummy light.....autotap to see if it gives you the correct readings....it probably should since those gauges are way off!!!!......just my two cents!!!......hell as long its not overheating!!

I did the same thing and the gauge never really changed. But when I took some readings with EFILive, I compared the before and after 160* thermostat swap and saw that before I was at about 210*, but after the swap it was at about 170* . So, the gauges aren't accurate at all, but if you read it with Atap or the likes, you'll see the difference.

on the 99+ cars GM replaced the gauge with a dummy one they had lots of people taking their cars in for service becuase the gauge would change(according to temp..duh)

I just wondered something, the "problem" with the gauge is in the computer right? What would happen if the computer were wiped and reprogramed as a 1998 (with the gauge working) or you swaped the 1999+ computer for a 1998 computer?

just a thought....

Not trying to be a post *****, but is the later model temp guages inaccurate due to computer reading/programming or guage itself/sending unit? if it is the unit/guage has anyone done a swap? TIA.

Charlie.

You should expect to see a drop in temp on your gauge, but to see it drop from 210 to 170 as was mentioned is really hard to believe. If that were the case Hypertech couldn't keep the things in stock. You should cross check you gauge with Atap or an OBD II scan tool to see if it's way off. If it is you might have a gauge or sending unit problem you need to look at just in case you have a REAL cooling systme problem in the future and your gauge isn't reading right. You don't want to let the smoke out of your engine because it's very hard to get it back in once you let it out.

On our 2000 we saw no significant change on the dash units reading after the lower 'stat install. Several threads over the last year or so have confirmed that there is an "idiot light" like function to our temp readings on the dash unit. I have read that the earlier year LS1 cars were more generally closer to actual temps but have never seen a report if it's due to the dash unit or the sender or possibly the computer. Just learn to recognise the general OK reading and watch out for something out of the usual.

My '02 SS has a 160 stat & HPP3. Gauge definitely reads lower after warm-up, but just because someone installs a lower thermostat doesn't necessarily mean the car will run cooler---stat just opens quicker. If you want to run cooler, buy one of the larger capacity radiators offered by SLP or BeKool.... WJ.

Unfortunately the gauges in '99 and up F bodies are just indicators now. They no longer have their own sending unit anymore.Instead the PCM reads its coolant temp sensor then sends that data to a processor in the cluster wich then tells the indicator where to sit! This is all done on a serial data line wich means on one wire it can send tons of info to different modules or indicators at one time much the way like the phone system works.Just a way of building cars for less money more profit,Sound familliar?

Thanks Turbohawk. Great info'. First time I've gotten what sounds like thorough explanation of the system.
