Default Muffler or full cat back system?

I just traded in my 97' Formula for the 00' Z and want to get better flow and sound. The Formula had just a Hooker aero chamber that sounded very nice and seemed to have more power over the stock muffler. I will go with just the muffler again on the new ride unless I am convinced the Hooker catback is worth the extra dough. Thanks.

get the hooker cat-back because you can't get an aerochamber in crossflow configuration in a 3in. inlet size unless you get the cat-back. i love the way mine sounds without cats, no rasp.

All you're going to get from a muffler is a tiny gain in power and just sound. If you get the whole cat back you'll get the full flow that you want to get the power to back up that sound.

I didn't know the catback system from Hooker came with a larger diameter inlet muffler. Hmmmmmmmmmm...that makes a big difference. Does the Hooker catback go all the way to the cats and replace the pancake pipe on the driver side? That looks a little restrictive on it's own. I already have some new tips that I want on the ends so I wouldn't need the tips that came with the catback...that's one of the reasons I would go with just a partial system or muffler alone. Any more suggestions? By the way, if anyone wants to recommend a different system, I don't want a super loud one. The Z is a drop top and transmits noise very well through the top.

Thanks

What size are the pipes coming from the muffler on the Hooker? Can you use the stock Camaro tips?

The dynomouth just made the list of what I will not get. Great sound but too loud for me. Thanks for the soundbyte though. From a performance standpoint, I can understand why that system performs as good or better than anything else short of a cutout. Your also shedding some weight by ichnaying the muffler...less weight=quicker car. What would it sound like if you put "two" bullits end to end? Would it be much quieter and less NASCAR raspy?

DynoMax makes a 'long' bullet too. Part 24219. Some folks use it in place of the short bullet when they are running without cats. I suppose it could be run with cats to make a more tame Dynomouth. I have also seen systems with 2 bullets... One bullet in front of each exhaust tip out back. The pics I have seen look good, you don't even notice the bullets in the pics that were take from a passerby's point of view. You could use smaller diameter bullets in that setup too, as long as it was the 'shorty'.
Just some ideas.
Also, though this system flows well, it doesn't much matter when you keep the cats on the car... like I said, even the 350 cfm Flowmaster 80 can outflow cats and make power over the stock muffler.

So bottom line is pretty much any muffler other than stock will optimize the car's output with the cats in place. Remove cats or get high flow units and muffler/cat-back selection becomes more critical. I can get an aerochamber installed for less than $150 and I know it will sound good and perform well. I will spend the money I save over a catback towards an FTRA

Thanks for all the input.

The stock system is 2.75" mandrel bent stainless.
Buying a whole new exhaust with .25" larger pipe is a total waste of money. You gain just as much from a good flowing muffler... Dyno proven. Even the sorry flowing Flowmaster 80 series outflows the cats and gives you just as much a power increase as any other until you get into mods and remove the cats.
IMO the stock pipes are plenty until you get into mods like heads and cam w/orp. Personally, after I get to those mods I won't waste my $$$ on .25" larger pipe. I'll go to a 4" Mufflex or duals.
Just get the muffler. You'll make as much power, sound as good, and for a whole lot less dough.
I have $140 in my exhaust and have been on the dyno with guys have many times that in their exhausts and made as much/more power than all of them with similar mods. (Lid, paper filter, & muffler) That $140 INCLUDED professional install too!
Good luck
Dave
