Default HELP after Hooker LT install

Didn't know were to post this, so i guess this is the best place for it. After installing a set of hooker LT’s on a 2002 SS, the steering wheel controls and air bag are not working. I had to take the shaft out to get the header in, and upon putting it back in, did not get it in all the way. When it was backed out of the garage, the shaft come off, and the guy driving kept turning the wheel to the right. I think he made almost 2 full turns to the right before i noticed and told him to stop turning. After putting the shaft on the right way, the air bag light is on, and the radio controls and the air bag are not working. The fuse for the air bag popped, but nothing else. What happened, and what is the best fix here. I am pissed that I have to pay for this, but it was my fault. Thanks a lot

thats what i was thinking, but after looking at the service manual for about an hour, I came to the conclusion that there is no wires that could get tangled and rip out. is there a sensor in there that could have gotten messed up when he turned it? I would think that it could be turned around and around with no problems

have you replaced the fuse for the air bag? i dont have my service manual handy, are the steering wheel radio controls on their own fuse? I would try replacing the fuse to see if that fixes it, that would be the easiest and cheapest fix. If doesn't help, i dunno. I hope i dont run into this problem when i install my jet hot header in month. Good luck fixing it.

He ripped your clock spring apart. It is a printed curcuit that is coiled in the steering column, to prevent wires from tangling up in there. Chances are that is the problem. I replace that on my father's ford truck and it was (IIRC) $70. Easy to install.

without knowing how many times the wheel was turned, does it have to be returned to the "right" position when the clock spring is re-installed? How much is it for the spring? does the wheel have to be pulled to replace it?

thanks
Eric

The airbag must be removed, but not the steering wheel. The steering wheel doesn't have to be excatly turned back, just so long as it is centered (like when driving straight ahead). The clock spring should come with instructions. There is no mechanical spring, the PCB is just called that. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

OK, I talked with a local dealer about it. They say it is the SIR Coil. It happens all the time when people try and install headers on newer cars and are not careful with the steering shaft. It rippes out the inside of it, and then it is toast. So, if anyone else ever has this problem, you got your answer
