Default Header capped itself a hole in the runner tonight!

So I was driving home tonight from work and heard a LOUD boom and then the motor started making this tapping sound. So I stoped right away on the side of the road and the freakin #3 runner on the right side header had a hole on it!!! Yes a hole... about 1/2 inch in diameter on the primary close to the flange.

This is not normal is it, I'm not even running nitrous or FI to get the headers that hot or anything!

uhhh.....no that is not normal.
You probably hit a rock or something and it knocked a hole in it.
...And your pictures are not showing up.
What is a runner? You mean primary?

I believe LG's are stainless

How long have they been on the car

It was probably a random flaw in the metal that nobody saw

Yeah I used them as an anvil before!!!

The headers are not rusted, its just surface oxidation from humidity. They are less than a year old.

There is something wrong with your headers. I am speaking about the material itself. That looks like a brittle fracture (no deformation around the periphery) which would indicate the tubing had been improperly heat treated. It should be nice and ductile and if it was, there is no way a hole like that would result. Stainless steel is susceptible to embrittlement if the wrong grade is used for welded applications. I'd call the the manufacturer and explain what happened and see what they say. If worse comes to worse, you can have it welded but it might just happen again someplace else. Better than nothing though.

This is exactly what I'm thinking, a weak spot in the material frrom improper heat treatment and or bad quality material throughout the whole header!

My hookers did that at the air connection on the driver's side. I just had it welded over.

Damn... if there wasnt any fitting or boss welded in thst spot, it must be a material defect. Dont drive the car again or you may burn the exhaust valve on that cylinder.

There was a guy here locally that recently had a set of Pacesetters do the same thing. It's either a weak spot in the material or IIRC Bo White said that he has seen this same thing also caused by a lean condition. Do you know what your EGTs are?
