Dave,

My new tailpipe is 2 1/2 inches. No mounting changes were needed. I selected the 2 ½ inch 17236 rather than the 3 inch 17235 to simplify the weld to the intermediate pipe. Also, I was probably over-concerned about making my car too loud. In my previous post I stated that my car is quieter now. I should say that I didn’t make before and after sound level measurements. The sound seems to have shifted to lower frequencies. I may have perceived the reduction in higher frequencies as a reduction in total sound energy. I believe it is not louder. Wife and son hear no difference but they are less attuned than we are to the subtle nuances of LS1 music.

Gary Z,
Cool...
I too think that crossflow false duals are bad & cause a HP/torque loss...

I'm trying to decide on a single tailpipe exhaust system to go with myself...

Also, 'true dual' over-the axle setups WILL cause a HP/torque loss...

A single pipe from the end of the 'y'-pipe , thru the muffler, and out ONE tailpipe will make the most HP/torque because of a hotter/faster flow...

I'm going with the Magnaflow 14267: http://www.exhaustproslinc.com/mag5x8camste.html
If flows very well and is one of the quieter mufflers out there. 3" in and dual 2.5" out. I'm going to bolt it up to my stock tailpipes but if anyone knows where I can get replacement 2.5" tailpipes I would appreciate the info.

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh.........
Rut Row Scooby, we've been had.....
what a joke...
The Borla Pro xs line IS a low cost entry level muffler designed for neighborhood auto service centers. They sell it to 18 year old pimpled faced kids, by selling them a 'cheap' BORLA muffler for moms station wagon, instead of a 'walker' replacement muffler.
The 3" ofset/offset muff has a 2.5" core ????? With a 'MAC' thick bead weld inside each end, it's 2.25" in/out ??????
I could bend the core better with my hands, for the offset/offset bends, as it is really messed up inside in the two places where it has to bend. Metal is 'folded' 'crushed' over into the tube airstream ?????
Ok, time to get an RMA number to send this 'junk' back......
Or, maybe , cut the 3" nipples off, weld some 2.25" nipples on, & I got me a BORLA muffler for the family Minivan...
No wonder jegs, summit ect. don't sell this junk, there would be too many returns...
Can't wait to read that Mustang magizine article on the muffler shootout, something not right

SmithZ,

That piece you read on mufflers. Was it just comparing 2.5" mufflers ?? Being that it was a test of mufflers for Mustangs, I bet that they were just comparing 2.5" muflers. If that is the case, you are choking your LS1 with that Borla xs muffler you put on. That's why it sounds quiet at both idle & WOT. Check into it before you 'lift' a head gasket.

If you want the quiestest, lightest, highest flowing and you've got the cash...Straightline has yet to find an equal. Go to any NMCA event and you'll see the dominant muffler.

So which one of these mufflers would fit best if it is replacing the stock muffler. I'm going back to the stock catback but replacing the muffler.

I just replaced my borla with the hooker. It is VERY quiet but heavy as hell. I thought the borla was supposed to be heavy.

I have resurrected this old thread because I think more people should consider single-in/single-out mufflers instead of phony duals (catbacks) for their F-body. I recently replaced my 2.5-inch in/out Dynomax with a 3-inch in/out Magnaflow 14589. Back when my car was my dd, I had selected a 2.5-inch because I assumed it would be quieter than a 3-inch. The car now has longtubes and is mostly a Wednesday-nite drag racer. Surprisingly, the new muffler is quieter than the 2.5-inch. Also, since it is polished stainless steel, it looks good too. My tailpipe is a 3-inch j-bend that I got from Stainless Works. Total cost was less than $200.

Good thread.

I'm still running the 3" TD's, DynoMax bullets/dumped set-up and am completely over it. I must be getting old.....

Liking the Straightline stuff. Maybe the DynoMax ultra flow, but the plan is to quiet this thing down at the mufflers a bunch and go dual elect. cut-outs as soon as the big inch motor is finished.

Wish more of these guys would post cfm data.....

This is the oldest grave dig I've ever seen!

When it comes to quiet/high flow, the SLP dual/dual is great, Hooker is nice too.

Do you have any sound clips? I have a similar exhaust and would like to hear how it sounds with long tubes.

Magnaflo has a new X flow crossover muffler slightly bigger than stock muffler that fits stock location. Two perforated straight pipes surrounded by steel wool that crossover in the middle. How cool is that? I'm going for it with 402 SS along with tru dual set up SSoon! dual 3" in...dual 3" out!

Should be as deep and as quiet as you are possibly going to get with the biggest flow.

Stands to reason!

Sorry, "stock location"...I was thinking F-body, not sure what you can fit in your ride. But check it out on the Magnaflo site.
