Default Over-oiled K&N filter, what problems???

Hey all,

What problems would an over-oiled K&N filter cause? I've got some recent idle problems and I'm thinking that the K&N might be the source. Basically my idle is rough and when I come to a stop (clutch in) with the a/c on, the idle drops to like 500 for a second and then comes back up.

Thanks,

Russ

It could be the oil on the MAF sensor. It is supposed to be sensor friendly by who knows? If there was oil on the wires in the MAF I could see that causing trouble all over the place though. Not just at idle.

Check to see if your local Radio Shack carries Blue Shower, remove the MAF and spray the inside of the MAF with the Blue Shower, let dry and re-install the MAF. Good luck.

Thanks for the heads up Dark Age. Does anyone happen to know the actual symptoms of an over oiled K&N?

I also had a few problems after I cleaned the filter and reoiled it. Didn't let it dry or wick sufficiently or something.
This led to a problem of lagging response and a jerky acceleration right afterwards. I freaked and parked the car at my girlfriends a few miles later. Gave it a couple of hours to wick and dry some more, drove it the three miles back home, and took the filter back out of the car. Looking at the MAF, saw some of the oil had made it up the intake as far as the screen, and probably the sensor behind it as well. I cleaned the screen with a shop rag and used some paper towels to soak up any excess oil or water on the filter. That was about a month ago, and I haven't had a problem with it since that first drive.
Hope this helps, good luck.

Yes, probably oil on the MAF sensors, this will not only cause idle problems but can affect performance over all RPM's. Best to clean the MAF at this point in the game, and be careful not to damage the sensors.

How should I go about cleaning the MAF??

Also, exactly what TYPE of problems will the over-oiled K&N display (i.e. surging, stalling, etc.)?

Thanks,

Russ

Thanks Aegnor,

The more I ask around and read about it, the less I think I have an overoiled filter. I'll be checking things out this weekend.

Are the new KN filters pre-oiled?

Over oiled K&N filters could also starve your engine of air. It may not be oil on the maf. I know on motorcycles if you don't clean and lightly re-oil new K&N's before you use them the bike runs like crap....because it is being starved of air.....just my .02
