Descreen MAF - Yes or No?
Well I was going to get an SLP 85mm MAF but was told not to by SLP since I have Hypertech programming. Now, the thought of descreening my stock MAF has entered my mind. Should I or shouldn't I? I know a lot of people have, but I keep thinking that this is the last stop before any crap will enter the intake and the engine. And, when I did my lid and cai, I noticed some particles stuck to the screen that somehow went through the air filter. I'm not sure if I should do it or not. What do you guys think? I do want to capitalize on my recent LS6 intake purchase though.

What would y'all say the best way to de-screen the MAF is? I was looking at mine today and I'm not quite sure how to smoothly remove it!?!?!

Well if you want to take the screen off without destroying it - let it sit overnight in enough paint thinnner to cover where the screen joins the MAF. Then use a thin bladed screw driver or knife to work it off the next day. It's held on there with some kind of adhesive and the paint thinner (use the liquid kind, not the gel stuff) breaks it down and makes it easier to remove. Worked for me! Then you have your screen in one piece to put back on if you have probs.

Yeah, I think I will do it. Oh, and I totally agree with you on the TransGo/converter issue in that other
"LS6 Intake" thread.

I can't imagine the difference would be very noticable, if at all. But hey, every little bit helps!!!

Re: Descreen MAF - Yes or No?
I just took the MAF apart and pushed the screen off with my thumbs, no problems, came off in one piece. how do those "mystery particles" get thru the filter??? I even have a foam piece all around my lid. oh well, no problems.

Re: Descreen MAF - Yes or No?
It looks like I'm going to be the only guy to say think about this. I've desceened my car soon after I got it, and had no problems while pretty much stock. After getting just about all the bolt on's I could, I decided to go internal. This is were the descreen MAF became a problem. When I installed the cam my L terms went through the roof +20. After ruling out other possibilities, it pointed to the MAF. Bought and installed an 85mm screened and they sank to +4. I just tuned them to under zero, and things seem:
1. less turbulent(more consistant logs)
2. same if not more power

That's why it's a good idea to remove your screen INTACT! That way if you get probs like 2002snortbird described it's an easy fix to put it back on .

Re: Descreen MAF - Yes or No?
I've also found particles lodged on my MAF screen. They were part of the gasket a the bac of the lid. I'll get back to you about the excact location tommorrow.
