Default Ported MAF Ends and No Screen?

I installed my thunder racing ported MAF ends today and could not get the screen out of the stock end...is it suppose to come out? I tried to push it out but it started to crack so I stopped. Is it ok to run without that screen?

Thanks

It's just fine without the screen.

Brutal LS1 ,

What year do you have? I have read a lot of people get good gains removing the screen!!, and also read that the 01 and 02,s do not like the screen removed! which is why I am on the fence seeing I am in the later group. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

You can't remove it w/o destroying it.

you have a 2001, your sig says "just lid and exhuast" but obviously you did the screen because of the post.... How did it act after the fact....
I want to do my o1 but, have heard bad things on the o1 and 02s only.... <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

I have an '02 Z with a stock ported and no screen MAF and just dyno'd at speed inc. today. The o2 says I'm way lean especially low end. They said to put a stocker back in so I don't burn my valves, they said I would only lose 1-4 going to stock MAF.
My experiance.

What’s up with the double posting??

Any way...Thanks Venkman,
I was reluctant to do the mod because if it did screw her up I would have to buy an other maf,
But we have the same car with the same mods....

So I will give it a shot,

The only other mod I am looking at is the baffles...
You gave that any thought..

I took my baffles out and sealed the hood to the airbox with a piece of $4 sheet metal from Home Depot. I saved the large baffle and tapped the top 2 holes - I use it as a rain guard if it is going to rain real hard. I have driven it in heavy rain without the guard, and no water gets by the filter. It will, however, require that the filter be reoiled more often from being washed!

It works great and I had gains from it - about a tenth.

I waited till i got a holley powershot in there so water wouldnt eat it up.

Once you see what the air has to go through you will laugh at GM calling it 'Ram Air' from the factory.

Those must die too <img border="0" alt="[evil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" />

What was your o2 reading exactly and do you still have the screen in? I'm dynoing their sund. and I don't want to have any MAF related problems.

I have read on another site that the screen is held in with an adhesive of some kind. To ease removal and keep it from breaking, some people have let the end with the screen soak in paint thinner or similar type of solvent overnight. This will loosen up the glue and the screen should slip out with minimal force, just a suggestion, hope it helps.

I have a stock MAF with ported ends and no screen. Up to 3200rpms the AFR is between 15 and 16 then drops to just over 14 to limmiter.

BLK02WS6, Venkman ,
Thank you! you both were very helpful, My holly will be here today, so looks like it is time to remove the baffles, however it is obvious how to remove the back one, how did you get to the front one.? and yes the air is REALLY slow after all of the turn it gots through in the stock form.
also looks like with my 01 the screen stays in till I hear more.

Thanks again,
Pete <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

I have an 01 WS6 TA and removed the screen from my stock MAF sensor. I removed it by using my 90 degree small pick and inserting it through a hole near the edge of the screen in a few spots. It popped right out - just left a few small holes in it. I didn't get a baseline performance spec. with it still in, but I have to believe it helps alot. As for the lean condition question, I have run 8000 miles since with no problems- no lean exhaust codes. I didn't think to check o2 sensor data on the Tech 2. I may do that just to see what it reads. I see guys spend $300 for bigger MAF sensors and they leave the screen in them. It seems a waste of money to me. I've had people say they don't remove the screen because it's the last "filter" before the engine. But hey, what about all those cars on the road without MAF's that have nothing between the filter and the throttle blade? I'll stop rambling now!
