A weak battery will be a lot harder on the alternator, and since most people don't replace batteries until they are 100% toast, it is part of the equation. If you can only run your acc for 10 minutes on your battery, it's time for a new one.

About replacements, remanufactured alternators are a total crap shoot for some reason I've never understood. Pretty much the only good thing is that if you get a bad one, it'll die fast.

Approaching 64K on my stock alternator and I'm on my second battery. Not that the original died, I just replaced it before it went.

I lost my alternator on the formula with about 6,000 miles. Got it replaced under warranty and haven't had a problem since. In fact its the only problem I've ever had with the formula.

155,000 MIles on my 2000 Z28...stock everything related to electrical stuff.
The only issue I have had is with my Alt Gauge and the interior lights. The gauge wiggles a bit (not much at all, but it wiggles) and the lights only on start up seem to pulse somewhat...but at Kragen they did a live load test of electrical and found it to be fine...so I shall drive it till it erupts..then go to a special rebuild shop and have it rebuilt..155k so far..how many more one will have to wait and see
