Default true duals or hooker cat-back?

which one of these would you recommend? i want to get rid of the rasp I have now (hooker LT's,no cats,Borla cat-back). I want a deep rumble thats not insanely loud, also if i were to go true dual, what exactly would I need? is there a diff in buying an x-pipe or having my local guy fab one up? also i would want to have them go out the back i think. any suggestions you have would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks

I've had both. I went from the Hooker cat-back to true duals. If you are just looking to get rid of some of the rasp, weld in a 12" or 18" bullet muffler in the i-pipe. That will get rid of a lot of the rasp. Thats what I did when I had my Hooker on. If you want "a deep rumble thats not insanely loud," you probably don't want true duals. They are deep (depending on the mufflers you use) but loud.

I think I am the man you need to talk to.

Here is the run down for you on the exhaust I have had on my car. I am very indecisive when it comes to this **** so I change it alot.

All this is with FLP longtube headers, no cats, heads/cam, 3" y-pipe ( except for the tru duals of course )

1. Borla Catback -

Good: This one was awesome sounding. It is distinct from the rest in its tone. The interior noise was not bad. You lose very little power through the muffler if run run no plate. Tips look cool. You can change the plates to restrict how much of the flow goes through the muffler and how much bypasses.

Bad: Like you said there is a rasp inbetween 2k and 2500rpm that can get agrevating. You can put a bullet muffler in the I pipe but that will only get rid of 80% at best. It is also heavy and comes in a lot of pieces so if you want to take it off at the track it can be a pain. Expensive.

2.Hooker -

Good: Quiet, interior noise is minimal. Easy to drop the muffler at the track, a matter of minutes with 3 bolts. So if you wanted it loud you could just drop the muffler on the weekend and go race and wouldn't be out but a couple minutes and a dirty shirt. Resonance is virtually gone. Suprisingly very little power loss through the muffler, only 6rwhp on my car is gained my dropping the muffler, not bad. Nice lightweight aluminzed piping, good fit. Tips are nice. PRICE is GREAT.

Bad: may be to quiet for some, but then again you could just drop the muffler. Not much else wrong with it IMO.

True Duals -

Good: They make the most power out of them all, only a 3rwhp loss at peak compared to running open headers with extensions. The way mine are made I have a bullet muffler off of each header then the x, then turndowns before the axle. They also draw a TON of attention, so if you are attention ***** you will love these. Sound is amazing, proably my favorite of the group.

Bad: LOUD insode the car. You may be able to use a bigger muffler to get the loudness down but as long as you have it dumped before the axle I don't see it getting much better. Ground clearence on the turndowns is the only problem I have but my car is lowered 1.5"s. Add a passenger or 2 and it gets worse, and no they are not fat passengers.

So in short this is what I have had on my car

Stock
Borla
Hooker
Borla ( again )
True Duals, x pipe, bullet mufflers
Hooker ( again )

As you can see I am back to the Hooker, they will get you everytime. For a person that wants a loud car that draws attention and makes the most possible power, I would say go True Duals. For the person that wants a quite car and like to talk on teh cell or listen to the stereo then I would say the Hooker is for you. And well the borls sounds great and all but it has that damn resonance.

hope this helps some...

Duals out the back are quieter only in the passenger compartment, but they are still extremely loud unless you choose your mufflers carefully (drone at 1900-2500 RPM, especially, and at WOT). I added 3" cats (to pass inpsection and get rid of the fuel stench), which quieted them down a lot. Now they are not too loud, but not too quiet, either.

I have true duals.. all I can say about them.. is that I love'em.. Mine go over the axle(over drivers side and one over the passenger side axle) Interior noise is fairly quiet.. cruising down the highway.. you can still carry a conversation. From behind the car... it is fairly loud.. especially when you get on it.. pricewise.. you might would rather look at a catback.. price isn't all that bad until you start talking about going over the axle(In my experience anyway).. Maybe this helps you out some..

I have the hooker and love it, I'm about to put in a qtec which will be nice as I can make it loud and quiet depending on how I feel at the flick of a switch. This may be a good idea for you as well?

I have duals, and if you like performance without care...thats the way to go
Mine dump before the axle and the only time some sort of noise bothers me is from 1800-2000rpms.
I guess its what you guys call "rasp", sounds like a 4banger in that rpm range, but once it hits 2000rpm or goes back below 1800rpm, it sounds deep as hell like its supposed to
So if you dont want alot of vibrations, rattling, rasp, and deafening exhaust sounds, dont get duals
if your part deaf or stupid already, go for it
