Default Do O2 simms really work, plus a couple more Q's

OK, heres the deal. My county just imposed a new type of emissions around here. Well, they don't sniff the car anymore, they just use a computer hookup and check the whole car through ODB II. Well, to me this means that I can run an off-road pipe with O2 simms if they really do trick the computer into seeing that everything is fine down there. Does anybody have any comments or suggestions about doing this? Does anybody else have this kind of emission testing in their area? I want the most power, but I don't want a bunch of crap when I get inspected. Thanks in advance for the help!

To answer your question, yes, the o2 simms do work. I have them installed on my car.

TWS- I had a question for you, why does my exhaust fumes smell rich? If you don't know, maybe your friend will. Thanks!

I'd say go to shop that has the air/fuel sensor as part of their dyno equipment. (I'm goning to do this next week myself, have no numbers on the hairdryer yet).

Do at least one dyno pull and have them tell you what's going on with your A/F ratio. Make sure to check it in both closed and open loop.

You shouln't have a problem with the obd test. I have offroad y-pipe and running o2 sims and my car passed the obd test with no problem. I think your only problem will be the sound with no cats if the inspector is a "punk" he might not allow you to pass, but then again they are many inspectors' that just don't pay attention!

The way it was explained to me, the second set of O2 sensors (after cat) do not affect performance really at all. They are just monitors, sending information that is NOT acted upon. They will turn on your SES light, however, to get you to pull the code and see what they are trying to tell you. (because of them, the SES light is on now all the time since the blower ) Now, the set before the cats, they will provide inputs that the computer acts upon to adjust fuel and timing, and will therefore affect emissions.

I'm not an expert, I didn't design the car, I may be full of However, this was explained to me by an older, very knowledgeable gentleman who reads up on this stuff and then tests it.

So, I think the second set of O2 sensors will not influence your emissions output.

And finally, to answer your question directly: yes, the O2 simms are supposed to do the Jedi mind trick, telling computer that eveything is just fine and dandy and don't mind all my mods, they're really not there.

Can anyone else confirm or deny my take on this?

Be careful. Here in Houston they have the same thing but they also do a visual inspection to see that they are on there. Of course you can over come this by just putting some gutted cats on there.

As long as they don't do a visual inspection and you are using O2 sims you will be fine on the OBDII test with no cats. TWS pretty much explained the logic.

Man I love Louisiana, smog test are nonexistant. Usually they have you hit your brakes, turn signals and honk your horn, if that much. The place I take mine, the guy has you bring your info inside and he fills out the paperwork and gives you the sticker to put on your damn self. For all he knows you may not even have a car out there.
