Default Catalytic converter ???'s

Well I had been having a nasty rattle from the underside of my '98 z28 for a couple months and have finally traced it to the passenger side catlytic converter (its broken up inside and rattling around). I took it to the local shop and they quoted me $350 for a new cat.

I have seen aftermarket high-flow cats for half that much. Now what I want to know is (1) will i pass CA emissions w/ high-flow cats, (2) will the aftermarket cats break down on me like my factory ones did?

Also, would going to an aftermarket catted y-pipe make a noticible power difference? And would i pass smog with that?

Thanks.

You cannot move the cats from the stock locations and pass in California. Your best bet is to pick up a set of used ones off the boards and bolt them up. You'll need to find out which years you can use (I think 98-99) and buy some from someone who has a set laying around. You could get some shorty headers and a catted y-pipe to match that keeps the cats in the same location.

This is a really nice setup done by a Oxidizer (works for Magnaflow) to another board members car. Notice the Overhaulin on the floor?

I actually have shortys i plan on installing, so the y-pipe would be catted as described. But yeah, I think I'm just going to try and find some take-offs from a local slavage yard or something.

if your car has 80,000 miles or less the factory has to replace them for free. Hope that's the case =D

if you want to purchase some hi-flow cats just make sure you put them in the stock locations.... it really doesn't matter if they're OBDII compliant just as long as it passes the sniffer

O YES IT DOES...all cats that aren't compliant will burn out very fast and usually throw a code..saying there are not any at all...
