Default To Descreen the MAF or not to descreen the MAF..that is the question

Well....what do you guys think? I bought a new book titled, "How to build High-Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8s". By Will Hanzell he says he got a lot of his info from Ed Koerner. In the book it says to descreen the MAF and even tells you the easiest way to do it. What do you guys think? What are the cons of doing this? Because according to this book, there aern't any, just gains in horsepower.

Do not descreen. No HP to make it worthwhile, and some report problems afterwards. Some even have to replace them.

Some people have good luck with it, but it's a crap shoot with the prize being next-to-nothing.

+1 on it not worthwhile. If anything, I'd guess it's only worth .05 rwhp.

My tuner de-screened mine while on the dyno, he said as long as you compensate for it in the tuning you're fine. Is it really worth it? Not sure, we saw a little gain, but he was adjusting a few things at the same time.

I would probably just leave it alone.

When i installed mine, i noticed a huge front end difference, BUT,,i installed my K&N, Lid, CIA, SB, and MAF all at the same time, along with all TB mods at the same time as well, so hard for me to tell you that just the 85MM MAF that made the diff all on its lonesome.

The stock MAF is good to about 400+ HP, so unless you've got about 6-8 thousand dollars of parts waiting for your wrench time, (less if you want to be a ricer [achem.. juice]) your stock MAF is perfectly fine. Also, I did descreen mine, however I do plan to get a tune in the near future. Choice is up to you, just know that once you take it out, you will not get it back in. In LT1's the screen is held in with a seal ring, but in an LS1, it's just seated in there, so you're likley to damage the screen when you remove it.

actually your stock maf is good to 500 hp, not 400. do you plan to be making over ~430rwhp? if you don't, you'll never need to change your maf...ever.

think of it like this: ever hear of reports of dirt or buildup in someone's maf screen? that's a common problem for throwing codes - a dirty maf screen. that means that your maf screen stops some large particles from entering your intake manifold. those large particles would be in your engine if it wasn't for your maf.

don't so much as TOUCH the stock maf. it keeps your engine running better and helps keep it cleaner in some cases. stock maf FTW.

Just run a freakin air filter...yea, I know some dirt passes thru filters, but if it goes thru the air filter, CHANCES ARE that lil honeycomb mesh isn't exactly gonna stop the dirt in it's tracks

even if it stops 3 little chunks of dirt, it's still 3 less chunks of dirt in your cylinders.
