Synthetics were designed to maintain their viscosity and lubrication properties under extreme temperature ranges. They also have better volatility control which helps them resist oil consumption better than conventional oil. Running a synthetic oil (despite the misconception) does not always mean that you can go longer between changes. Synthetics do keep engines cleaner longer, and tend to maintain their properties longer than conventional oils, but extreme driving conditions can still cause synthetics to become contaminated in relatively short time periods. The only way to be sure is to test your oil, so blindly running a full synthetic for 10K miles or more without testing it could lead to problems for some driving habits and environments. The reality is that, for most normal driving conditions, a conventional oil is very effective for the LS1 if changed regularly. (I.E., daily drivers that do not see the drag strip or extreme environmental conditions). I have seen LS1s and many others run for 100K+ miles on conventional oil with no problems. For those of us who do not fall into that category, or do not mind spending a little extra $, the synthetics become a good choice. You will never be wrong for choosing a synthetic, but you aren’t always necessarily wrong for choosing a conventional either.

I am changing my Oil this Weekend & was going to run the Royal Purple 5W30 Synthetic, Is that to thin of oil for my LS1?
Also what Oil Filter should I use?
Does anyone know what the part # is on our Fuel Filters? 2000 LS1

As seen in some of the earlier posts, some people have oil consumption problems when running the 5W-30 because of the PVC system effect on the lower viscosity oil. I have been running 5W-30 Mobil 1 in my LS1 for 40K miles and I never have to add oil between changes (knock on wood). You will not "hurt" your engine by running 5W-30, but you will have to keep a close eye on your oil level between changes. If you do experience oil consumption, then try a different viscosity like CHACOTACO and others have reccomended in this thread.

I didn't need oil analysis to tell me M1 5W30 is crap. I used to get crappy oil pressure with it. Then I went with M1 5W40 or 0W40, forget which(whatever the truck oil is), then pressure went up 5-10. Then I switched to Castrol 0W30 and the pressure was about the same during easy driving and it actually might have increased during WOT. That definitely shows how thin M1 is. I think I get a solid 60psi now @WOT. I don't think I even got that with W40 M1.

mobil 1 0W-40 will work, also. it's good oil. however, GC 0W-30 is better than all mobil 1's. the GC 30W is as thick as a mobil 1 40W, but it's a superior oil base. you can get that ONLY from autozone.

i can not find a Mobil 1 5W40 or GC at all in my area

it's $8/qt and seems pricey, but you get free shipping, no tax and when you factor in time and gas it takes to run to the store, the price is pretty even. you're only paying ~$6 more than mobil 1, but it protects so much better, it's a small price to pay.
