I was wondering if the pipe could be cut with a pip cutter and then clamped back into place. I have a cutter and am too lazy to go somewhere to have it welded. On my 2000 it looks like a welded slip fit with about 2" slip. Instead of hacking it off maybe its possible to just cut the outter piece.

This whole subject shows just how some exhaust designers are. I mean "Oh it's too loud, so hey lets just block it off". idiots..

Yes it is a welded slip fit (i found out). You would probably have to remove the whole catback so that you get all the way around the pipe to cut just the outer pipe and then use a u-clamp to put it back. The ring itself is about an inch away from the muffler.

Make sure you have the ring before start cutting on it. They were only on the SLP installed dual-dual exhaust for 2000 (not sure about other years). Your driverside tailpipe should be consistently cleaner than the passenger side pipe. Also, put you hands down by the pipes while the car is running, the majority of your exhaust gases should be coming out of the passenger side if you have the ring. I will be real obvious. Then there's alway the wire hanger test. Slide it up the pipe and see if it gets hung up before it reaches the muffler.

Me, I just took a reciprocating saw and cut the pipe 1.25 inches away from the muffler. The ring was on the the muffler side of the cut. Using the same saw I cut the ring out. Then I used a 2.5 inch stainless steel band clamp to put it back together until I can get it welded. It holds really well actually.

I didn't remove the catback, I didn't even jack the car up.

The only digital camera I have right now doesn't record sound. That's why I used the Camcorder. My son is coming home for Thanksgiving. I'll see if I can record it with his camera. That will take care of the "After"

But I still have to figure out the "Before" which was recorded on tape.

Mine is a 2000SS with the SLP supplied D/D. I am not that lucky to not have it in the first place. Also the borascope (sp) I went down the pipe with confirmed it was there.

the GM installed Y2Y SLP Dual/Dual's had it, but the aftermarket one that you bought from SLP didn't. that was the cause for their "more powerful" muffler.

So, the oem Y2Y SLP dual dual muffler and the aftermarket SLP dual dual muffler sold by slp performance parts are the same identical muffler then???

This is a hilarious thread. This has been an ongoing "mystery" since 1996. The only way to know for sure is to check. It's a kick *** exhaust system, and it's not a big deal if it has it, it still flows good. If you don't like it, you can take it off. I still don't know if my '96 with the 2OTL has the cone, I bought the car new and I never bothered to check. It seems to run alright.
